The North Central Conference is folding.

Post by ModestMouse »

As I was reading in a paper.

I was hearing that the NCC (what UNO plays in) is playing its last season in 2007-2008.

SO! does this mean that UNO is moving up to Division 1?

or is it still staying in division II (the last remaining schools in NCC are all trying to move up to D-1)

North Central Conference knocking on death's door
Thomas said the NCC probably will play its final games after the 2007-08 school year. Here is a quick look at some NCC turning points:

October 1921: North Central Conference formed.

May 1922: The first NCC championship was held in Brookings and USD won the track and field title.

1949: NCC leaves NAIA to join the NCAA. Since then, NCC teams have won 43 NCAA Division II national team championships - 12 in the last seven years.

May 2002: The University of Northern Colorado announces its plans to leave the NCC to pursue NCAA Division I athletics (DI-AA in football).

September 2002: North Dakota State announces its plans to leave the NCC and move to DI.

August 2003: South Dakota State announces its plans to leave the NCC and move to DI.

August 2004: Former NCC member Morningside leaves NCAA DII and joins NAIA.

June 2006: The University of North Dakota announces it will move to DI.

November 2006: The University of South Dakota announces it will move to DI.

Decision looming on future of Maverick athletics

Decision looming on future of Maverick athletics
I didnt realize that Minnesota State was also named the Mavericks.

From your first posted article
Current NCC members St. Cloud State, Minnesota State-Mankato and Minnesota-Duluth have asked for information about the NSIC. Augustana is already pursuing NSIC membership. Nebraska-Omaha, the other remaining NCC member, has begun preliminary discussions with the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Augustana is my alma mater --- from what I have heard they looked at going Div I but decided to pursue membership in the NSIC. In many people's opinion Augustana just didnt have athletic bankroll to move up.
Money: Oliver quickly realized that the biggest issue for a private school with Division I aspirations is fund-raising. That happened to be one of the main reasons he was hired: Augustana has an endowment of just $46 million.

An endowment is money that has been donated to an institution with the stipulation that it be invested, and the principal remain intact.

When athletic director Bill Gross visited Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. - a Baptist institution of 2,900 students with full-scholarship Division I-AA football - he was told the school has an endowment of $330 million. The Bulldogs fund their athletic department with money made off interest.

A new home for Augustana

What was long considered a mere formality became official Monday, as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) admitted Augustana College, St. Cloud State University, Minnesota State University-Mankato and the University of Minnesota-Duluth into its league, effective for the 2008-09 school year.

Presidents of the 10 member schools voted Monday afternoon to expand the NCAA Division II league to 14 teams, adding the four schools that began looking for a home when the North Central Conference announced this winter it would fold after the 2007-08 school year.

because of the fact that UNO is not joining is probably a good sign that they may make the jump to I-AA

I think UNO at one time was looking at MIAA conference.

The commissioner of the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association said he is open to the idea of the University of Nebraska-Omaha joining. Last week, former U.S. Sen. David Karnes presented findings from a study of UNO's financial situation, and recommended, among other things that the university pursue a move to the MIAA.

UNO's enrollment is significantly more than every MIAA school... in many cases 2-3 times more.

It's also larger than all of North Dakota, North Dakota State, South Dakota, South Dakota State, and Northern Colorado. So why aren't we following them into D1?

The Omaha University/UNL football game alone could probably pay for a good chunk of cost of moving up.

Agreed. But isn't UNO going through a power vacuum right now - No AD, Interim Chancellor (I believe) - who is there that could make such a bold (read wise) decision?

Does the UN system have any say about UNO going to 1-AA? You think they'd realize the benefit of it.. oh yeah they're all husker blind.

And my old alma mater Augustana College - nose Augustana University - is looking to move up to Div 1. In my opinion a mistake but they didn’t ask me.

Side note - I didn’t realize that the Summit League had moved their headquarters to Sioux Falls.

Most UNO fans are unhappy with the possibility of Augustana joining. They are hoping UNO explores leaving the Summit League.
