...so where do the Mutual employees work then? I thought most of them worked in that building.

Oh, the building they took the sign off of is a different building than I thought it was. Nevermind...

Project means new look for part of Farnam Street

Planners are trying to quiet the traffic around the Midtown Crossing development to make it easier for people to park and walk in the area.
As part of the massive development, Farnam Street will be changed from a four lane, westbound-only street to one with two-way traffic and a center turn lanes.
The goal is to fuel retail development and make the area more friendly to pedestrians. The changes are meant to make the area a more inviting place to stop for some shopping or dining.

I won't be able to make it to the meeting tonight, so if anyone goes, please give us the report.
I was hoping Farnam would go two-way at least west from the interstate to the Med Center. I know it's part of the overall vision, so I understand them just being concerned with the direct project area for right now.
Heck, I think Farnam should be two-way all the way from downtown west.

Here's a few pics of the model. Also watch Channel 6's broadcast tonight, you could see a horrible interview featuring me on there.

Heres a pic of people checking out the maps of the planned street changes. It was a very short speech regarding the plans and then turned to this general Q&A session. The man in the blue suit there is Husker legend Johnny Rodgers, who will be opening a sports bar on the SE corner of 33rd and Harney.

The model pics or me on tv? My 6 comes in so bad I could barely see it but I know I was on. My 3 day beard and nicely broke out forehead musta drawn them to me.
If you were meaning the former then thanks. ;)

Re: Info regarding Trader Joes at Mutual
I have been to Trader Joes stores on both the East and West Coast, and always found them crowded with shoppers, and full of wonderful eclectic bargains you just can't find here in Omaha. (our friends who religiously shop there in the OC are millionaire Republicans --not exactly hippies) I would really like to see them open in Omaha. I do know that when you find one Trader Joes you usually see two or three more stores within a few miles. I don't know how well that would work in a town like Omaha. I don't see us able to handle more than maybe two, one west and one mid town, such as the 72nd Street corridor.StreetsOfOmaha wrote:Trader Joe's is in so many WAY smaller markets. That is ridiculous.
I actually find Trader Joe's really annoying (compounded by their reluctance to come into the Omaha market) and couldn't care less if they ever come to Omaha except for the fact that I know a lot of people would like it and it would "look good" for Omaha.
Frankly, the ones I've been too are frustratingly busy most hours of the day, with pretentious, elitist hippies scurrying about trying to find their organic/whole wheat/vegetarian (sorry Bob)/vegan/all natural/smug-fortified food items.
Although, an Omaha store might be less annoying to me since it would have OMAHANS shopping at it.

Here are my shots of the model. This is nothing like the old model they had out which looked like old Chinese food boxes.
Looking east down 33rd & Farnam.

Prairie Life on 33rd and Farnam

Around the crescent with Farnam in the background

"From" Park Plaza with Dodge St. in the foreground

Above the new Turner Park

Notice the little driveway inlets and entrance to the garage from Dodge St.

This just looks way cool

That's going to be a nice little canyon on that stretch of Farnam St.

I still don't see how this project only has 200,000 feet of retail space. Wouldn't that mean this has almost the same amount of square footage as Village Point? Maybe the whole urbanity thing is throwing off my perception.

I think it's the urban environment that is skewing your perception. Village Pointe dropped into that neighborhood would be enormous.

Are they changing Farnam from a 4 lane one way street to a two way street with one lane going east, another going west and a middle turn lane? I guess what I'm trying to say is: are they narrowing Farnam st? 'Cause if not, then the scale of the model is a little bit off.

From the OWH article:
Farnam Street will be changed from a four-lane, westbound-only street to a two-way route. The redone street will have two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane.

Also:
Metered, diagonal parking will be available, and sidewalks will be extended near intersections to make pedestrian-friendly "nodes" like those in the Old Market.

Officially opening Monday 11/5/07...
I apologize for the quality, I had just crossed the street when I noticed they were about to reveal the sign-carrying too many bags while trying to catch the action.

They had an internal unveiling of the bank after 4:30 tonight-I got downstairs after 6 and had to hang on to the atm waiting for them to break up so I could get out. Good thing they don't open tomorrow-I'm sure there will be some hang overs with all the booze they had setting out.

Might see it around 2012-not sure if it will be the same building though. You have to stop up you won't recognize the South Site Plaza. The new Outtakes is up and running, it will be open to the public. Starbucks is about to reopen, not sure about the cybercafe, might open after the bank.

I saw inside the other day as I was going by and I could tell where the old wellness center used to be isn't at all the same.

There's safe deposit boxes to the left of the Wellness center, the bank is to the right across from Starbuck's. There's a directory sign when you first come in to the building now.
