Cool, right in my hood. I'd love to see a few more patrols around here. I think this sounds like a great idea (at least on paper). Maybe this is where this city starts to take a stand.

The best quote was on the news....
"if we some one up to no good, we will walk up to them and say pull you pants up to your waist and get on out of here".
I hope it works out. I would like to see the the crime go down and some neighborhoods visually clean them selves up. (unless you have to clean your hood then the crime drops?)

Man, if there's any intersection in Omaha that needs some visible opposition to the riff-raff, it's 24th and Leavenworth.
I'm cautiously optimistic about this. Hopefully no one is going out there to prove how tough they are, though.

That's what some other citizen patrol groups are worried about.Big E wrote:Hopefully no one is going out there to prove how tough they are, though.

This is a VERY positive development, and should have a significant impact on the recent trend of gun violence in the city. I grew up in the NYC area, where these guys started, and once they move into an area, there's almost always immediate benefits.
A couple of things that help set them apart from regular police and/or other community policing presences.

- A very visible presence - they chose red caps for a reason. You know they're there.
Tougher, younger, more hip image than other community watches - its not granny watching from behind her screen door. They're much more apt to get a volunteer directly from the areas they're patrolling. They recruit Angels and make good solid citizens out of the same folks that could have gone the other way and joined a gang.
Long history of success. They've seen it all (and much worse than Omaha). If they can make an impact elsewhere, they can help here based on what they've learned in other cities.
Community based - its the locals patrolling, not the cops, and they build relationships with business and home owners. People that were traditionally hesitant to report things they've seen generally are more willing to talk to the Angels.

Guardian Angels Patrol Omaha Streets
KETV wrote:Omaha's newest crime fighters started working the streets Friday night. They're the city's first group of volunteer vigilantes known as the Guardian Angels. The men and women just finished 13 weeks of intense training. About 50 people applied to be members, but only a dozen people made the cut. The group started their patrol Friday at 8 p.m. near 24th and Leavenworth. The security force is unarmed, each carrying a bottle of water, a radio and handcuffs.

I thought most of this has happened a lot farther north than 24th and Leavenworth. The volunteers are patrolling Omaha's most dangerous neighborhoods in response to recent violence.

Yeah, I think D'Shawn and Josh could cover that part of town.
