Take off the vinyl siding and voila you may just have a nice brick building behind there. I would think it would make a great bar or restaurant overlooking the new lake or Saddle Creek. Imagine a nice large deck suspended over the creek. Not to mention that at 132 years old it has to be one of the older structures left in Omaha. Parking issues would need to be resolved but hey surely it could be solved.
I would guess that about 95% of the structures are not historical, however Zephyr tells me that one of the buildings is an old train station from the line that use to run along there.

I like the bar and restaurant idea!

Never once would it have crossed my mind that that building was 132 years old.

I agree... imagine what might actually be under that lovely late-19th century vinyl siding.

I'll cut you some slack considering you were posting after 3AM but there is a separate thread for the research tower. :;):

I think the bridge looks fantastic and needs to stay as a bridge over the chute, with a new bridge over the relocated Saddle Creek.

And I am SOOOOOO not impressed with this building. It's a mess.

Anyway, thanks for all the pics, Brad. You were busy this weekend!

Isn't ironic that the "Child Saving Institute Building" is being saved in both proposed options when UNMC is at times pro-stem cell research?

Yeah, you are right! Actually... I have heard (at work) that there are some "behind the scenes" discussions going on between that organization and UNMC.

I too question the rationale of demolishing the bridge, yet saving "questionable" properties.

Isn't there a Durham Research Tower thread? This thread's about moving Saddle Creek Rd.

Anyway, thanks for the picture.

The topic seems to cover both of these subtopics.. It doesn't say anything about moving saddle creek.

Well - now that this is the official UNMC thread - this was finally announced:

Dr. Maurer: Hogans' generosity essential for geriatric center
UNMC Today wrote:Simply put -- a new geriatric center on the UNMC campus will be built because of the generosity of Omaha natives Lori and Paul Hogan. That was the word Wednesday from UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., during a news conference to announce a major donation the couple made to help fund the new geriatric center.

The two-level center will occupy 25,300 square feet and will cost nearly $10.2 million. It will be built at the intersection of Leavenworth Street and 38th Avenue at the present site occupied by the Annex 4, 5 and 6 buildings on the east end of the UNMC campus. Construction is slated to begin in September with completion in August 2009. The building will be funded entirely with private donations including the Hogans' gift.

The Home Instead Center for Successful Aging will create physical space for both the sections of geriatric medicine and geriatric psychiatry, which currently include seven geriatric physicians, five geriatric psychiatrists and one geriatric psychologist.

approval, the geriatric center will bear the Home Instead name.

But you will succeed in dying prematurely.

Also, I live right across the street from this, and I'm not sure where they're building it.

Annex 4 is right on the NW corner of 38th & Leavenworth annex 5 is to the west of that. The Weigel Williams Center for Visual Rehabilitation is being built now on the SW corner of 38th & Jones.

UNMC gains more Saddle Creek land
Omaha World Herald wrote:The University of Nebraska Medical Center has acquired another tract of land in its bid to expand its research facilities along Saddle Creek Road. On Thursday, the Omaha Public Power District board of directors agreed to a land swap with the medical center. OPPD will relinquish its service center property at Saddle Creek and Leavenworth Street for university land near Eppley Airfield. The medical center has said it plans to build two research towers and parking areas on the OPPD land.

Yes - this first came out several months ago when it was disclosed that UNMC and OPPD were discussing this proposal. This now makes it official - the University of Nebraska will build a new facility for OPPD and cross all the t's so they don't have to worry about land studies - what will be interesting is the size of the 'towers' that will be built here. One will be for cancer research. Since this land is lower than where the other two research towers are I wonder of there will be a connecting passageway over Emile St.

Planned plaza will give UNMC green space, ice rink in winter
Omaha World Herald wrote:The University of Nebraska Medical Center will build a plaza and artistic feature east of the new Sorrell Center for Health Science Education at 42nd and Emile Streets. The plaza will be converted into a mechanically chilled ice rink in wintertime.

The medical center announced that Omahans Ruth and Bill Scott donated the money for the project. The center declined to say how much was donated by the Scotts, who have made several major contributions to the institution.

my brother applied there for med-school...it is becoming increasingly difficult to get in, as one would expect. They've got a really good success rate (obviously) and are highly regarded as being one of the fastest "up-and-coming" medical centers in the region, and country (for public universities). With development like this, and what has been going on the last 10 years, it's easy to see why.

Gift aimed at construction of College of Public Health building
UNMC Today wrote:The new building, which will cost $16.5 million, has been made possible by a donation from Ruth and Bill Scott, longtime supporters of UNMC and the University of Nebraska. Construction is slated to begin in January 2009 with completion in April 2010.

The College of Public Health will be south of Dewey Avenue on the east side of 40th Street in what is presently a UNMC parking lot. It will be flanked by the UNMC Eye Clinic on the north and the UNMC Student Life Center on the south. The 52,500-square-foot facility will boast three levels and will be one of the most state-of-the-art buildings on the UNMC campus.

UNMC to seek new addition for College of Nursing
UNMC Today wrote:On March 7, UNMC will seek approval from the University of Nebraska Board of Regents for the construction of an addition to the College of Nursing.

The proposed addition will provide space to educate more nurses at the baccalaureate, masters and doctorate degree levels to help alleviate the growing nursing shortage in the state.

The addition, which will cost $14 million, is being made possible by a donation from Ruth and Bill Scott, generous benefactors of UNMC and the University of Nebraska.

No - one will just be an addition to the east side of college of nursing building and the College of Public Health building will be just north of the Student Life Center and be a little larger than the College of Pharmacy.

I was told yesterday about UNMC building a new tower for patients. I'm not sure if any of the previously posted information on this thread was what they were talking about.
