I leave 3 exterior lights on at my house all night long 365 days a year! Granted they are the lowest wattage compact florescent lights you can buy, but its enough light to illuminate the doors and cars!greenbuilder wrote:Who What a Waste Of Energy!!!

Screw compact florescent bulbs. About 8 months ago, we re-did our basement and put in recessed lighting. I spent something like $60 or $70 for 12 bulbs. After all, they cost less to run and last 5-8 times longer. Well, 2 of them have already burned out, while I have not had to replace an old bulb in my house during that time.Brad wrote:I leave 3 exterior lights on at my house all night long 365 days a year! That said, I am going to head out on a limb and guess criminals are not adverse to busting out lights.

Just counting down the years to a universal LED replacement! 100,000 hours bulb life with low energy requirements. I do see where they have come out with affordable dimmable fluorescent flood lamp bulbs (for recessed cans ~$9).

I am surprised LED technology is not mainstream now.Andrew wrote:Just counting down the years to a universal LED replacement! 100,000 hours bulb life with low energy requirements. I do see where they have come out with affordable dimmable fluorescent flood lamp bulbs (for recessed cans ~$9).

Here is a study done in Chicago that shows adding more street light increased crime.

Well considering my exterior lights are recessed... I am good for this light "pollution".

The study showed that reporting incidents of crime went up --- maybe they could actually see it happening in the alleys. Also the biggest increase of reporting was drug offenses which tended to take place in alleys. Here is a study done in Chicago that shows adding more street light increased crime.
While this evaluation could not provide a definitive explanation of these findings,
it is likely that some of the observed increase in reported incidents is due to increased
reporting of crime by residents, who may simply be more aware of offenses taking place
due to the improved alley lighting.
