And the cost of this whole stadium oversight committee and all the accompanying research cost what?

The cost are be covered by an $800,000 private donation, not city funds or tax payer money. Next question?

The cost of the the study would have required city council approval, are you suggesting the funds were simply taken from the city?

I think that's the next question, in a general sense, not in regards to the source of funding - how do you trust the mayor?

Since I don't live in Omaha, I can freely say I can trust him at least as far as I can throw him! :;):

New question -

You seemed eager to answer -

granted he isn't Kwame Kilpatrick or Ray Nagin...

and I think we as a society have come to accept that our leaders lie and deceive us. I still haven't gotten so jaded and expect our leaders to be forthright and honest.

If it weren't so honest it would be funny: How do you know when a politician is lying? When he/she is moving their lips.

Its my belief that we as a society deserve the leaders we elect. New Orleans and Detroit have leaders that reflect the society. We have one that reflects ours.

My biggest problem with this mayor is that he cannot sell an idea. Granted - Omaha voters are 3/4 stupid - I agree with that. The mayor (giving him EVERY benefit of the doubt) is doing what he feels is best for the city (and himself) but does so without converting a single person that was opposed to the DT stadium. I haven't talked to ONE person that changed his mind on the stadium because of the mayor. In fact the opposite - I talked to people that oppose the stadium because they cannot trust the mayor. I was one of those people.

I think the mayor is corrupt - I base that opinion on the joke that is the police/fire pension. I know he is not an idiot so he had to know the ramifications of those terms. Ever notice how he is NEVER called on this issue. NEVER. I think he wanted the stadium issue to draw attention away from the sewers and police/fire pensions. Seriously.

Do I want to seriously recall the mayor - OF COURSE NOT - but please don't pretend like we have ourselves someone more than who he is.

Don't confuse agreeing with the stadium with agreeing with the mayor.

Jesus Christ! Read this page from the recall site and point out to me all of the misinformation they are saying that can easily be disproved. I lost track at about 10.

http://www.recall-fahey.com/Ccwatch39.html

One big one I noticed is that on the Rosenblatt section is they they claim that people will be paying the debt off of Rosenblatt until 2019. What complete brain dead illiterate god dam idiots! It's been in the media numerous times that the Rosenblatt debt will be paid off by a private donation. And that's just one example.

If you have half a brain don't sign this petition. Fahey hasn't done anything that warrants a recall election.

AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I just went back and skimmed over the link article and now I understand what makes people want to be suicide bombers. In probably 30 seconds I read about how the stadium is part of a "liberal agenda" and the their is no proof that anyone would even want to pay for naming rights of the stadium!

"Sports stadiums do not attract new industries."

That was my favorite quite...

The worst part is its a partial truth. Those are the best lies - statements that include partial truths are always the best. How can anyone that is involved in real estate actually think the stadium will have ZERO economic impact on North Downtown?

"Sports stadiums do not attract new industries."
What do they want? A new smelting plant? A stem-cell research facility?

No, sports stadiums surrounded by parking lots, churches, and shanties that make more money on one day of unreported parking income than they do on a year of rent do not attract new industries.

Show me a stadium built in the last 20 years in an urban setting (such as Camden in Baltimore) that has not spurred INSANE development around it.

Rosenblatt was/is an economic failure...

I am guessing much of their opinion is based on its history.

Banned for life? Just for doing their part of ridding this city of the CWS - its their god given right to complain like children - I would say the same thing for each idiot that voted against casinos.

Some guy was set up in the parking lot of the old Target on Saddle Creek with a big sign, " SIGN FAHEY PETITION". It was a pathetic sight, the sign was on a 4x8 sheet of plywood and looked as if it was painted by a 4 year old. It was propped up against a POS pick-up and the dude didn't look like he had showered in days. While I was eating at the Rice Bowl, not a single person approached him. I don't think he was having much luck getting anyone to sign the petition.

They started out with a bang, but to get the numbers they need they will have to keep up about half that pace for a month. Doesn't seem likely.

I think they'll get about 2,000-3,000 signatures in South Omaha, and then about 3,000 in Elkhorn. And maybe 2K from the rest of town. In the end, I think they'll end up not even turning in the petitions since they'll fall so short, they won't want to embarrass themselves further. (Much like the Daub recall petition, which at least had some valid issues...)

After speaking with some people "in the know" about the legal rules of running a successful petition drive to recall an elected official, it appears that the mayor may have a silver bullet, and the recallers an Achilles heel. I won't go into it here and now for fear of tipping the balance in favor of the recallers before it is too late for them to react.

I know someone who is collecting signatures for the drive. He is totally irrational when asked for his rationale for the recall. He blames the mayor for property taxes. I tried to explain the disconnect, and after rebutting several of his basic misconceptions about how government budgets are set and properties are appraised, he finally threw up his hands and said "I don't care what anyone says, the mayor needs to go." Of course he has no clue who might take his place. And no clue that even if Fahey were recalled, the stadium will be moving downtown one way or the other.

As one of my college professors used to say: "Ignorance is bliss, and you, sir, must be truly blissful."

I have no problem with recalling him for the pension issue (he is either VERY incompetent or crooked for signing that agreement), but see no reason why he would be recalled over the stadium issue.

I'm guessing they will get most of their signatures at the Royals home games of which there are 13 or 14 home games during that time. I like going to the Royals but I'm going to hope for a lot of rain outs. I think they might get close with the numbers needed. I hope they have screwed up legally.

i guess i didn't realize the Royals started playing already, though opening day is close at hand (the year is flying by!) I would dare say, though, that with the royals not having large crowds, of those people only a percentage would be willing to sign. If the recall election does or does not come to fruition, the short sighted land owner needs to be tossed in the river along with the good people at MECA. And as a side note, i'll say that i appreciate what MECA has done for concerts, but if they |expletive| up the CWS, that will be their legacy. School teachers and public officials do manage to help a lot of people, but the second they do anything resulting in questionable judgement (that has the impact like CWS), that is how they will forever be known. That could have been 2 parts, but it all kind of goes together...since one of the reasons for the petition was the downtown stadium. If Fahey gets recalled, so should MECA.

This is a bit off topic, but i actually enjoy the Omaha Royals a decent amount (i can't stand the KC Royals, though...except for George Brett) and though i LOVE the Chicago Cubs, i don't really like the Iowa Cubs. Go figure.

I saw 3 people with petitions standing out by 90th street in the parking lot of the new north 90th Pamida. I wanted to go tell them they were stupid, but I decided it wasn't worth the break pad to stop and turn. Why they picked that location is beyond me... The only thing i could think is that is was right by the fire so may be they were trying to draw attention from the news media. If that is the case, that means that the Recall the Mayor group is using others trading to support their agenda! Wow, I know a cult in Kansas that works like that.

Brad --- now I think you are looking for conspiracy theories.

There were two cars stopped there by them when I drove by yesterday. And people were signing the petition.

Not that I think it will succeed but Fahey's PR group really should be kicking in overdrive to put information out there. He has become a lightning rod for anything that will 'go bad' with this project.

According to KETV, they gathered 1,600 signatures on the first day. My guess is they would be lucky to get 1,600 more when this thing is said and done, which is why they will not update the numbers.

Actually, judging from the Recall web site, there's just three or four people circulating petitions... One at a storage facility on Crown Point, another in Elkhorn, and a third at 90th & Maple. :lafcry: :lafcry: :lafcry: :lafcry: :lafcry:

I was at the Royals game tonight and saw 1 petition dude and he was sad. I stood in line for tickets a long time and did not see one person sign it, in fact most people had some thing negative to say to him about the effort.

I pretty certain this recall effort is dead in the water. I'll be surprised if they don't give up soon.

World-Herald reports that they are picking up another 300 blank petitions. Not sure how many signatures can fit on a petition. http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=2 ... d=10303920

They've also added a couple more locations for signing... a snack shop inside the Center Mall, another just south of there, and an equipment company at 75th & F. Unless there's a sizable door-to-door effort underway, it still doesn't look like it's going well for them. (The opposite is probably true... it appears to be going well for the city!)

Also from the article:
Members of the group say they are unhappy with Fahey's handling of the stadium, city finances and other issues.
They are waisting another $300,000 if they have an election.
