Sometimes I wonder why companies don't do a little background check on acronyms they establish for their products. Case in point, a headline in today's World Herald Business Digest section reads this:
Omaha World Herald wrote:Verizon offers free PDA, phone classes
At first I was excited about the thought of brushing up on my make-out skills with Verizon employees free of charge. To my dismay, the PDA stood for "personal digital assistants" and not "public display of affection".
This reminds me of our cash registers at Target. They named our network of registers the "point of sale" network which was affectionately acronym-ed the "POS network" (which, for those of you out of "the loop", "POS" is a widely known acronym for "piece of |expletive|"). Shortly before I quit, we got new registers. I guess in order for the registers' manufacturing company to advertise the fact that the point of sale is taking place in "real time", each register is stamped with the phrase "realPOS" on their drawers; a phrase that I often found had dual meanings.
ASSOCIATED PRESS wrote:Des Moines police say two men apologized to a woman after they broke into the wrong home looking for drugs. Police said the men kicked in a door to the woman's house about 1:20 a.m. Monday asking where the drugs were. At least one of the men had a gun. Police said that when the men realized they had broken into the wrong house they apologized and left.
Some friends and I were watching the Tony's last night and saw that. I'd like to give a special thanks to our DVR for giving us the ability to rewind and watch that at least 6 times. Freaking hilarious!
The house his father built, brick by brick, with his own hands has been mysteriously demolished.
“I said, ‘What address did you have?’ and he said, ‘They sent me some GPS coordinates.’ I said, ‘Don’t you have an address?’ (and) he said, ‘Yes, my GPS coordinates led me right to this address here and this house was described,’” said Byrd.
Byrd said he suspects the intended target was actually across the road.
How horrible! I could see it happening though, as Google Maps and every other service has my house halfway down the block from where it really is. Stupid head should've double checked.
Kelly said she has asked a professional photographers' organization to help figure out how her image wound up in Prague. Smith said next time she posts a photo on the Internet, she's going to lower the resolution or add an electronic watermark to make it hard to reproduce.
I included a (semi-crummy, taken with a friend's P&S digital, cropped quite a bit) photo of the one I have.
I was kinda surprised to find not too long ago that my photo appeared on an Ebay listing for the same model camera, with my old blue bedspread as the backdrop and my initials in the corner. I'm surprised the creep didn't at least edit that out!
An Omaha man was injured after exiting his moving vehicle on Interstate 480 Thursday. . . .
. . . The witness said Nelson was leaning out of the vehicle as it traveled down the interstate. The driver’s side door was open and Nelson was “hanging out of the doorway.”
The witness said Nelson then jumped out of the vehicle as if he were going to try and push the vehicle down the interstate; however, the witness said the vehicle was moving too fast for anyone to attempt the maneuver.
As Nelson jumped out of the car, the vehicle veered to the left and struck a concrete guardrail. Nelson was pulled under the vehicle and run over. . . .
Oh yeah, and aren't those South Dakota plates on his car?

Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, a 69-year-old Omaha man flashed the lights of his white Buick Century at the cruiser of a police officer near Portal and Hupp Roads.
When the officer pulled over to the check on the man’s well being, the motorist told Sgt. Kraig Gomon that he was too drunk to drive. The man then handed Gomon an unopened liter of Vodka. Gomon and another officer, who responded to the scene, noticed the man smelled of alcohol.
During the incident, the motorist told the La Vista officers that he had begun consuming alcohol around 10 a.m. He said that he had six drinks of Vodka before deciding to contact the police officers and that his last drink was around 8:30 p.m., about 30 minutes earlier.
He told police that he contacted them because he shouldn’t have been driving and couldn’t keep on the road, according to police.
The man failed field sobriety tests and also a preliminary breath test, La Vista police said. He was booked into the Sarpy County Jail on suspicion of drunken driving. His blood-alcohol content tested at 0.103, which is above Nebraska’s legal limit of 0.08 to be considered drunk.
My father-in-law works for the IDOT and said that the other day, a lady was trying to get to Omaha by using the currently-under-construction exit from I-29. Instead of taking the detour and going around, she thought that she could just turn from I-29 onto what they call "Big Bertha" (480 coming from Omaha, North to Sioux City), and went backwards. She got pulled over by a commercial vehicle enforcement officer, on the Nebraska side. She was, what they called, an "old bat." I'm surprised i haven't seen this, or that i missed it if there was a report on it.
Just another reason that they should (honestly) have elderly drivers reassessed to maintain their license.

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:According to a police report, a housekeeper had just entered a room to clean it about 9:30 a.m. when a man who was not a hotel guest barreled through the door and locked himself in the room's bathroom. The housekeeper heard the shower turn on and went to tell the head housekeeper about the incident.
When the housekeeper and her supervisor returned, the room door was locked with the deadbolt. The pair began knocking and, within a minute, the man opened the door and took off running.
Shull saw the man, dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, running down the stairs and gave chase. The man was dripping wet, wearing shoes but carrying his socks, as he reached an alley outside the hotel.
“He smelled Neutrogena-clean, but I bet he hadn't run that far in 10 years,” Robert Shull said. “He was a stocky guy, and he was spent by the time he reached his truck.”
Shull followed the man to 11th and Dodge Streets, where he got into a “fairly new” gold Ford pickup truck with a camper top, Shull said. Shull caught up with the man as he labored to unlock the driver's door.

“I think he was after a combination of our soft water, wonderful bath products and clean rooms,” he said. “It's a combination that is pretty hard to resist.”
Todd and Tyler just did a news story were two guys in Omaha tried to rob a Wells Fargo Financial yesterday. They didn't realize that it was not a bank and the people in the office had to explain the difference between Wells Fargo Financial and Wells Fargo Bank.

Watch the news clips posted online at KETV or WOWT and you won't be surprised that they could make such a mistake.

Officers suspect it was a prank, considering Halloween is approaching, but they say it’s not funny, safe nor acceptable.
The story itself isn't strange, but the title is just ridiculous considering it has NOTHING to do with the Husker game. Seriously... does everything in this town have to revolve around Nebraska football??? Sigh.
PERFECT example of the media going overzealous mode with the Husker stuff. I honestly don't hate the team, it's the media and the psycho (not all mind you) fans that drive me bonkers.
OK, this is Sad, Odd and Funny all in a strange sort of way. From the fact of what these people do, to having been on Wife Swap TV show, the first name of the boy. Overall it is sad for the boy and his family though and as of this posting he is still not located so here to hoping for a Positive outcome.
DEVELOPING: A homemade balloon slowly descended in a Colorado field Thursday, but the fate of a 6-year-old boy believed to be inside was not known, authorities said.
The bizarre scene played out live on television and prompted fears that the flying saucer-shaped balloon would crash with the young child inside.
The child was identified as Falcon Heene, the son of a Colorado weather-chaser. The boy and his family first appeared on the ABC series "Wife Swap" on Oct. 3, 2008 and were voted back for the 100th episode of the show, which aired on March 13, 2009

For the record NEBUGEATER does not equal BUGEATER !!!!!!!
the today show had the family on, and the dad seems like a huge fake. I wanted to reach through the screen and kick him in the nuts for being a girly bag.
Brad wrote:I hear its now coming out that the dad put him up to it for "the show".
I wondered that myself as more info started coming out about that dad. I thought this was a way for him to get press on his balloon.
Exactly what I was thinking. Maybe not so much on his balloon, but his storm chasing work. Either way, why the |expletive| would you have a balloon inflated and ready to go in the fall? Storm chasing ends by July.
Looks like Nebraska has a similar "good parent".... Some lady dropped off her 9 year old a the Miley Crappus show at the Qwest and went over to the Casino...
