I happened to check out the Burlington cam one night earlier this week and they appeared to be testing lighting on the bandshell and throughout the park. Wow. It's going to be really cool.

I’ve been saying it since ground broke in 2019 for this Riverfront Redevelopment Plan- this is a game changer for Omaha and it’s downtown core. More developments will sprout up because of it..and we’ve already seen a by-product of this with the Mutual Tower and Streetcar line proposals..

3 to 5 years from now, Omaha’s downtown will be the envy of most all of its peer cities in that 1 to 1.5 million metropolitan population range..if it isn’t kind of already :;):

There will be round-the-clock security of this park - some on foot patrol, and some to watch the cameras.

Over the past few months I have been watching the Burlington livecam a lot. I don't know why, I find it relaxing. Over the last week they have been manually adjusting all the lights, turning them on and off in groups, and getting everything programed. I saw a few times where they went from no lights at all, to all the lights on at once, and it was almost blinding. I love the handrails with the built in LED's and the color changing lights on the trees. A substantial portion of the $325 million budget must have went into the lighting.

Couldn't agree more. The emphasis on lighting and accessibility helps to make the RiverFront a welcoming destination for Omahans and visitors alike. Thanks, Brad, for continuing to capture these incredible perspectives. Can't wait to see in-person.

I really like the look overall, but I just hope that they maintain all the shrubs, flowers and bushes that they planted on the hillside near the 10th St bridge. I almost wonder if it would have been better as grass, but with the big slope, it probably would be a pain to mow. It all looks great right now, but those plants need to be trimmed and taken care of.

Omaha's Central Park Re-Opening

World Street

After four years, Central Park, also known as Gene Leahy Mall, is reopening as a completely new park in downtown. We fly over the park days before the grand reopening.

I have driven by a few times, and this park is light-years beyond what it replaced. Waaaay more usable, with tons of amenities. After seeing it, those who thought it shouldn't have been changed are fools.

I don't hate this building. But if the alternative is a 40+ floor skyscraper I'll take the skyscraper anyday. The architect Gyo Obata I believe is from a well known architectural firm from St Louis. Sadly he passed away this year.

Sneak peek of the projections on the Burlington building. Forgive the shaking and the cell phone camera.

Omaha city council moves ahead with plans to demolish downtown library

The Omaha city council is moving ahead with plans to demolish the downtown library. It passed six to one during Tuesday's meeting. City council member Juanita Johnson was the one who voted no, saying she's concerned about how many demolition jobs would go to minority workers.

"We're in an underserved community and obviously there's lots of opportunities here for individuals looking to pick themselves up and obviously provide economic growth to their families. So my question regarding whether or not this work will be sub-contracted out is very valuable to this community," said Johnson. The city will use Cox Contracting Company for the demolition and will pay them $678,000.

Had the day off so walked through it this afternoon. Even though the fences are down, it's still not open until Friday. I made it through most of it but got stopped towards the end. It was a nice lady who talked to me for a bit about all the new things the park has to offer.

It's incredibly nice. The kids area and slides look really cool. The 11th Street Promenade was still being worked on but it looked cool with lights strung up above.

Here are a few quick photos of the led wall under the 10th st bridge.

The Omaha Symphony was practicing at the bandshell even at 10:30 at night.

That wall is really cool. First time I have seen it on at night.

I was able to get a photo of the arch a few night ago with the string light on behind it.

I would assume they are similar to the video boards on the sides of a basketball court which have a thick piece of plexiglass on them.

I didn't really check it out, they were testing quite a few images on this and the side of the Burlington building last night. It was actually really nice outside and the symphony was practicing so it was a great time to check it out. It was really weird though, there were quite a few construction workers on sight testing lighting and you were able to walk through parts of the park but then security stopped me from some other areas.

It sounds like they are going to have pretty good security. Last night, there was a group of kids riding skateboards on the seating above the remote control boat area. Hopefully people don't abuse the area because it looks very nice right now.

Grand reopening of Omaha’s Gene Leahy Mall caps half-century of history
Friday kicks off weekend of free concerts, theater and family fun on nearly 15-acre park

Nearly 50 years have passed since Omaha leaders crafted a dramatic plan to help rescue a dying downtown: Build an iconic, people-magnet park through the city’s central business district. It’s been 30 years since that resulting Central Park Mall was renamed after affable Mayor Gene Leahy, who championed a “return to the river” movement that led to the mall’s creation. Now, a super-duper redo of the area’s most well-known public green space is reopening following a multimillion-dollar transformation that’s been three years in the making. Friday kicks off a free weekend of concerts and family events at the outdoor venue now called Gene Leahy Mall at The RiverFront. The makeover of the 14.5-acre mall completes the first phase of a $325 million tri-park renovation largely funded by philanthropic donations.

I wish I could share the video I took as well, the LED wall also displays video of course. They were showing a thunderstorm and then some elephants and birds running and flying by. I could be wrong, but I believe they have the ability to tie this all in to the sound system that has speakers throughout the park. I also noticed they have a narrow LED strip that runs the length of the bridge under it as well.

Looks real nice. I wonder if the city has any estimates on how many people will be visiting the GLM this weekend. I still think they should of had a soft opening. The place could be swamped and overwhelmed with people. I'm sure they've got it all figured out 🙄.
