Mutual of Omaha Tower (14th & Farnam)

Quick question: Why Mutual of Omaha (or any other building in Omaha) does not build more parking underground? Is it a matter of $$$? Is it the soil?

It might have to do with the water table at that location.

Definitely. I can't speak as to why some developments at tops of hills don't utilize underground parking, but Omaha is otherwise so hill-valley that either runoff or flooding is always going to be a consideration. Sure they could do it, but why?

I really want to pull over there and spend about 30 min during sunset, but I'm sure as soon as I did the state patrol would show up. Yesterday I just had a really fast shutter since it was the bright morning light, shooting from the back seat of a moving vehicle.

I have thought about talking to the Council Bluffs Police and seeing what it would cost to hire an off duty officer to escort me up there with a patrol car. I'm assuming that's a possibility since sports and concert venues hire off duty officers for traffic work?

On the Salt Lake City development forum on Skyscraper page they were talking about how many cities have their new tallest under construction. I complied a quick list and in terms of height, Omaha is in the top half of the list:

Miami: Waldorf Astoria Miami - 1,049 ft.
Austin: Waterline - 1,022 ft.
Nashville: 1010 Church - 750 ft.
Omaha: Mutual of Omaha Tower - 677 ft.
St. Petersburgh : 400 Central - 515 ft.
Richmond: CoStar Tower - 510 ft.
Ft Lauderdale: RD Las Olas - 499 ft.
Salt Lake City : Astra - 450 ft.
West Palm Beach: One West Palm - 426 ft.

Maybe one day they'll grow up and act like a real city.

A few years ago, a 33 story tower next to the Kaufman Center was proposed, but was cancelled. If it had been built, it would have been the third tallest in KC.

There was also this proposal next to the Power & Light Building about a year ago.



KC really could use a new highrise, other than the H&R Headquarters, and 1, 2 and 3 Light, there skyline has remained the same since the 90s.

It seems like certain cities just have a hard time getting anything built with any height. Albuquerque and Wichita would fall into that category. Interesting map. We actually could have 2 as the new building in Blackstone is 9 floors.

Wichita does not surprise me. Low growth, blue collar town with zero density and not many who want to change anything.

They were decades ahead of the curve when it came to transit and walkability. Hopefully, that sad number of 1 ten plus story development in Omaha does not stay that way for very long.

I don't think even when the economy was great in California that they'd be too high on the list. California is basically the epitome of NIMBY. But Chicago definitely struggles. Toronto is easily taking the title of second biggest skyline in North America soon.

Very nice. I've been wondering about the raising of the crane, so appreciate you sharing that info!

430' will put it approximately 45' shy of the Woodmen Life building.

That should allow them the get the core to "about" 25 floors before it needs to be raised again.

Just took this at 6pm. You can see the crane attached to the core now. There were 4 crane sections laying on the ground next to the crane.
Each one about 20 ft tall.
