Nice win for Nebraska, this season is going better than I thought it would, mainly because of a pretty good defense and a somewhat weak Big10 west division. Who would have thought we would have a winning record in mid October. If the offense can improve we have an outside shot at 7 wins this year.

Wow, I can't believe Wisconsin ended up winning their game, down 21-7 in the 4th and ended up winning 25-21 [facepalm]

So in my book, Iowa has the driver's seat because Wisconsin has Ohio State next week and should drop to 3-2, and Iowa has Northwestern and should be 4-2. Meanwhile, Nebraska is currently 2-2 and has Purdue, which to me is a scary, 50/50 game. Purdue is 4-1 against the Huskers since 2018, so I am nervous about it. A very important game coming next week. They have a shot at being tied for second or first after next week, should things shake out in our favor.

I feel an ugly one coming up. On any other given day, I'd say the Huskers would get wiped because Purdue's QB is the best in the West. However, the weather will play a major part in this game. I see a lot of errant passes and fumbles coming. I'm thinking it'll be reminiscent of the Huskers 9-6 win over Michigan State a few years back. High around 36, windy, and rain/sleet. Miserable football weather, but I think it'll work in the Huskers favor to even the game out. It's totally a toss up, so I'll go with Huskers 13-11. Purdue gets a safety somewhere in there.

I think that's a very realistic assessment. Being down three starting O Lineman could be a factor in this game and the rest of the season. Statically, Nebraska has a better than 50% chance of winning six games, however, with the number of injuries all the remaining games could be toss ups. Let's hope for home field advantage being a factor. A win tomorrow and I'll bet Nebraska gets the sixth win. A loss will substantially reduce that possibility.

^ I agree. I really think most of the remaining games are more 50/50 than anything. 5 shots to get 2 wins. I think it's really doable. It's been a very favorable schedule and it seems like almost every team is also in a down year. I'm still just a little nervous. It's gonna be a stressful upcoming set of Saturdays. It would have been really, really nice to have had that win against Minnesota. I think tomorrow is one of out better opportunities of the 5.

Right now, Nebraska's up 14-0.

I changed the channel from FS2 where the Nebraska/Purdue game was shown to FS1 where it's continuing. And I caught the very end of the Oklahoma/Kansas game. And Kansas just upset Oklahoma 38-33! So Oklahoma's no longer undefeated.

They blocked a field goal and returned it for a touchdown! Now they're leading 21-0. Incredible!

Nebraska won. That's great. I'll admit, though, when Purdue scored those 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter, I was a little worried. I was afraid they might come back and win it. Nebraska had a bit of a meltdown in the 4th when they let Purdue score those touchdowns.

I'm really quite surprised. I couldn't watch any of the game, but I saw it turned out 31-14. Absolutely not what I was expecting. I heard there were a lot if turnovers for Nebraska, so maybe they're lucky it wasn't closer? Any sort personal summary is appreciated. I can watch videos tomorrow

This is turning into a nice season for the Big Red after an ugly start , the only downside is the perception that the Big10 west is weak this year. But still a Winning season is a winning season, I'll take it.

Now we're getting into rare territory. This is the first three game win streak since 2016. How far we've fallen, and how far we've come. I really didn't expect to be on the cusp of bowl eligibility at this point, but I'll sure take it.

There was a time when winning 9 games a year and going to a bowl game was considered not good enough. Now people long for those days.

Frost drove this program into the ground, he was a terrible coach and hurt the program Tremendously. Only now are we seeing what a difference better coaching can make. If Nebraska can win 2 more games and go 7-5 it will be a huge turnaround for a beaten down program. Hats off to Rhule and the team. Especially the defense which has exceeded expectations. They really need to win their next 2 games against Mich State and Maryland as Wisconsin and Iowa always give Nebraska headaches.

FWIW, after yesterday's win, a friend of mine, who is a Texas fan, really didn't hesitate to say, "I think they can win out". My natural reaction was a chuckle, but he was serious.

There's currently a 4-way tie for first in the west between Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. Minnesota holds the tie breaker right now since they beat both Iowa and Nebraska. IF the Huskers beat Michigan Srate and Maryland (which I now believe are both really doable), those last two games against Wisconsin and Iowa are going to be extremely meaningful. I'm surprisingly delighted with this season.

It was a good game but they still need to figure out an offense, Purdue had a ‘spy’ on Haarberg so there was always someone waiting for him. And watching that game I really felt he doesn’t want to lateral to a trailing back as he ‘feels’ he can do it all. He had 19 carries for 22 yards.

I agree. The Huskers defense is much better than I expected this season. They just need to clean up the ball security issue and penalties..and I think 7-5 is definitely an attainable record (which is what I predicted before the season started)..

Looking at these last 4 games, winning out could happen- The Huskers are capable of defeating every team left on their schedule. As fans of the Big Red, we’d love to see it. I think realistically 2-2 or 3-1 will be the likely finish. And frankly, I’ll take it…

Other thing I love is how they've stuck with Heinrich Haarberg. I never knew who he was really, but all the praise I was giving Jeff Sims about his build and athleticism, I could easily have been giving Haarberg. Still about the same boat statistically as Sims, but at least he's from Nebraska and scores touchdowns. I wonder if they would have won that first game if he was playing. Skers would have 6 wins already and be alone at first in the west if they didn't blow that game against Minnesota.

Hard to say exactly who it was... But Mike Riley even mustered up a 9-3 season. He ended up 19-19. Scott Frost ended up 16-31 and had five seasons to wipe off whatever stink Mike Riley left. The fact Matt Rhule has already matched Scott Frost's best season record with four games left to go, and has a shot at getting half of Frost's career wins in one season says something.

I would say Scott Frost was the worst coach I had seen at Nebraska since I started watching them in the Mid 80's. He was worse than Callahan and Riley. His record was atrocious and it seemed like he was getting worse, you could say his first and second seasons were his best. I wouldn't be surprised if he completely leaves the coaching profession. Financially he is set for life if he manages his money well.

He will be a coordinator or a position coach again. He was a TERRABLE head coach, but many with the Huskers thought he was the right hire at the e time and most of the national experts thought so too.
While he was/is not cut to be a top-level Head Coach, I think is and will be a good position coach or coordinator again.

Agree, he could get back into the profession as an assistant or coordinator. But I don't see him as a head coach at least at the D1 level although possibly D2. Callahan has thrived in the NFL as a position coach. And we all noticed Franks success at Ohio. Giving up on Frank so soon looking back seemed to be the big mistake Nebraska made. Live and learn.

Frost and Riley were both kind of equally bad in my book. I do think Frost gets a coordinator job soon. If that goes well I think he will eventually land a HC job at D1.

He did, but he didn't nothing to improve the program from what he inherited from Riley. Some would argue, Frost took a bad situation and made it worse. I just think both were awful.

In the case of frost, inherent a bad situation that is a fact IMO. Another fact, IMO is that he did make it worse. Going from bad to worse is the one area that I guess we can say Scott F overachieved!

Surprise! Me on a sports thread. But I’ve wondered over the years: as I remember events, Riley was hired, in part, for taking a bad program and making it good. And then so was Scott Frost. And now so was Rhule. While the jury is still out on Rhule of course, were Riley and Frost in particular just lucky in their other jobs?

Riley had only had really moderate success at Oregon State (less success than Pelini at NU imo), Frost had incredible athletes to work with at Oregon as OC and at UCF as head coach. Rhule had turned two different programs around back to back in Temple and Baylor with very different scenarios. Temple had not been a perennially decent team in basically forever and Baylor was trying to rebound from their awful sex scandal. So he has quite a bit better/clearer track record.

Riley had 2 stints at Oregon State. The crazy thing is, Oregon State had it's best years in between Riley's stints there. When Dennis Erickson was the coach. People seem to overlook that.

Riley and Frost were equally bad at Nebraska. Part of that is, Riley inherited a much better team from Pelini, than Frost did from Riley.

Hmm, on second thought, might be a great excuse to go see my first live game.
