A 1920s building that once housed a Safeway supermarket has been transformed into The Mill coffee shop.
After several delays, the shop at 31st and Leavenworth Streets opened at noon Thursday to enthusiastic crowds. Owners Dan and Tamara Sloan said they had hoped to be up and running in December, but supply issues for an extensive remodel set them back.
The Sloans own four other locations of The Mill, all in Lincoln. Omahans have been looking forward to getting their own version of the shop since it was announced last year.
It was worth the wait. The Sloans basically gutted the inside of the structure, which also had been a paint store, to create a warm and cozy atmosphere in 4,500-square-feet. They did all their own design work.
Worked at the mill in Lincoln. Tamara and Dan take great pride in the fact that their coffee shops tend to begin the creation of a neighborhood when they open. It seems like they’re already off to a great start on Leavenworth, even a few days in!
at the coffee shop now - absolutely gorgeous and HUGE! Spoke to the owner and she said the brick is original and was hiding behind plaster for decades. Also, most of the flooring is original and there are beautiful skylights that were hiding behind the false ceiling. Very bright and industrial in here.
SARAH BAKER HANSEN wrote:The Mill opened in Lincoln in the mid-1970s by the owners of a bicycle shop who wanted to upgrade their coffee, eventually opening the first Mill in a spot adjacent to the bike space. That original shop moved into its current space in Lincoln’s Haymarket district in 1988 and began to roast its own coffee beans, according to current owners Dan & Tamara Sloan and the story shared on the shop’s website. In addition to that Haymarket location, the Mill has locations in Lincoln’s College View neighborhood, on the NU Innovation Campus and inside the Telegraph building. I exchanged several emails with Tamara, but we were not able to schedule a phone call before my deadline. Inside, the Mill Leavenworth has an updated version of that worn-in cozy vibe I so loved about the original Lincoln location. Chairs are comfortable and abundant. There’s a trendy but appealing library wall covered with a literal rainbow of books. Lighting is soft and warm. And, after 5, the bar seating area becomes an actual bar, with a menu of beer, wine and house-created cocktails, along with a limited menu of savory snacks.
See you on the patio this summer, granita in hand.

Just the shot in the arm my former neighborhood needed..And being open until 10pm seven days a week is a BIG plus..Considering most coffee shops these days close by 8-9pm or earlier..
It’s a nice place and a great atmosphere..but briskly busy the last 2 times I went. Their outdoor patio seating area is pretty large and nice as well. Glad “The Mill” finally made it to Omaha…
A popular Lincoln coffee chain makes its way to Omaha. The Mill located at 3105 Leavenworth St. is a favorite for coffee, smoothies, teas, and pastries. A 1920's art deco building, The Mill provides a rich, relaxed feel for students and customers who visit. "It seemed like every time we peeled off a layer we found some hidden gem that we could work with," said The Mill President Dan Sloan. "We put a lot of effort into it, really lean into the space. The Mill on Leavenworth is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Lyles, the Mill, and now Secret Park all opened in just a few months of each other! We rent in this Leavenworth neighborhood and are hoping to buy in this area because of all the upcoming businesses and potential we see.
Appears from listings that Galls (uniform store) has vacated the premise, next to The Mill, or new spaces have been added to lease. For Lease signs in the window as well
