It's no where near as bad as OKC in that regard though. Tulsa has similar density to ours, both of which are surprisingly good for a mid-sized midwest city.

Minneapolis and Chicago being the major outliers of course.

Density as dense as Omaha? Maybe in the past before their highways destroyed a lot of their neighborhoods, I go there once every few months for work, and Tulsa is filled with stroads, wide highways with frontage roads (texan style), the downtown is filled with empty parking lots.

As for OKC, I haven't visited, but I'm not surprised OKC would be worse in this regard.

Afterall, the state of OK is a Texas wannabe. Don't get me wrong Texas does many things right but one of the areas they fall short are making cities that are nice and truly vibrant.

Yeah, for some reason I had Tulsa as about 3k/ mile in my head. It's about 2k.

We lived in Tulsa from 2009-2013 and I worked in downtown Tulsa from 2011-2013. I found the downtown very walkable. I worked at 100 S Cincinnati Ave. The Blue Dome District was in easy walking distance, as was the Brady Arts District (now the Tulsa Arts District) as well as everything up and down Boston Ave. We never ran out of neat places to walk to for lunch or for happy hour. BOK Center and OneOK Field were nearby as well as the historic Cain's Ballroom.

I lived there from 2000-2004. The crime seemed comparable with Omaha from what I remember. I’ve been trying to find the data to confirm but haven’t found actual numbers for Omaha yet. It was very similar in that north Tulsa was the area to stay away from. While their downtown has a great skyline, back then it still was kind of dead and hadn’t really had any growth or redevelopment like it’s seen the last decade or so.

Great skyline is debatable, as Tulsa may have some supertall buildings, that make all other buildings in the city look smaller do to scale but they are relics of the 60-80s of the oil boom, when Tulsa peaked. Their tall buildings resemble Woodmen towers too.

Tulsa is not as walkable as Omaha, Tulsa has plenty of large parking lots that make buildings look like islands in the downtown.

The crime rate in Omaha is much lower than Tulsa. Though North Omaha is where we need to improve on, as crime tends to occur there. Omaha and Nebraska in general invests more in education than in Oklahoma. Oklahoma overall IQ is similar to that of Arizona, which is one of the lowest.

The question is, does education and investment in schools contribute to a lesser degree in crime?

I know that for the past few years since 2018, Tulsa has been running a program on incentivizing for people to immigrate to Tulsa and work from home by offering $10k in credits, so far this program has been a success; though I do hope that Tulsa continues to focus in making their urban core more densely and replace their large parking lots.

This is inaccurate. Most of the skyline, mid and high rises, are art deco buildings from the real oil boom of the early part of the century. They even have/had tours highlighting this. The 60-80’s were far from oil booms. Their tallest building is a half scale replica of the world trade towers. Most observers and experts are always impressed by Tulsa.

The oil boom started in the 1900s yes but the oil boom ended in the 70s, so these buildings were a product of the earlier success, so yes the 70s were Tulsas peak.

The world trade center towers were well known but they were a reflection of that time, basic boxed skyscrapers. They were iconic because they were well known.
As for the Tulsa skyline, it looks like I'm looking at a skyline from the 80s and older (though the deco skyscraper looks cool.

The Tulsa downtown is choked by a small loop of interstates in which the downtown skyline is in the middle and an overbuilt of highway systems, extra wide roads and frontage road systems, which cause highly segregated neighborhoods. Driving in Tulsa is just like Kansas City, multiple forks, multiple chances of accidents.
Tulsa is the type of city that Texas would be proud off (though Texas is known for its sprawling cities that are hostile to pedestrians) and Tulsa is one of the most notorious cities for having highway miles in the urban core, it's actually one of the top in the country (not one of the best stats to be known for) .
Tulsa downtown is full of parkinglots, and when I stay in the doubletree in downtown, I see a sea building islands surrounded by parkinglots. Downtown is fragmented into pieces do to the tiny loop of highways that split downtown. These features are not the best things in a vibrant urban environment. Even the night life in Tulsa is almost non-existent.

A murder in Regency yesterday. Omaha's crazy low homicide count creeping up a little recently.

What a punk - regardless of whatever the female driver was doing, this driver went nuts

I swear people have lost their minds. No one seems to care about the repercussions, either. They know it's a slap on the wrist and probably forgotten about in a few weeks' time.

Just saw they had disturbances and fights there last night and had to close early. Not good. I believe this follows a shooting near the Capital District the night before.

At least one of these incidents happened well past the closing time for the park, when presumably everyone else had left.

The new GLM attracts a lot of people from all over, plenty of people of various backgrounds, the police are planning on having local police presence at the park, especially at peak times. Also, these events were posted on the other thread.

Now lets look at the current crime events happening on the similar population city sized Kansas City within the same week.

If you go strictly in the city limits, yes Omaha is comparable in size to KC. But on that is not the case for Metropolitan population. KC is about double the size of Omaha In population.

It’s the first “incident” I can recall since the park rebooted. I’m not too alarmed. The disturbance was around 10PM- the police ordered the park closed at 10:30 instead of 11pm- so it was just 30 minutes of time lost..

I was enjoying the park today for a couple of hours- the normal large number of folks enjoying this amazing urban space, and there was live music at the Pavilion..

Another great day at the park…

Yes that's a given and we all know, but suburbs only offer a living place. They offer very little reason for people to get together and pick fights in a suburb.
Are people going to pick fights in parking lots or the cookie cutter strip mall or in a noisy intersection?
Suburbs are ideal for isolation, less people interacting with one another, the less likelyhood there will be problems.

Gene Leahy Mall has a constant rotation of people, plenty of chances for conflict to occur. That's why the police will have an on site duty officer.

Funny but I beg to differ, both Omaha and KC have suburbs within city limits. Yet both are the same with KC ~15k+ more residents within city. Both Omaha and KC are almost the same age by a few years. KCs metro size involves more annexed towns and suburb sprawl dominant growth, which have prompted the construction of many highway miles through the core dividing the neighborhoods of KC within city limits.

Yes, they are, they have, and will continue to do so. Since we're so fat in the burbs we have to take our kickboxing outdoors.

Yeah but it's really more than that. It's just odd to try and say the 2 are comparable in size. Comparable cities to Omaha are Des Moines, Wichita, Tulsa, etc. For KC, it would be Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Columbus. Saying Omaha and KC are comparable is more of a technicality. It's not like NKC is a suburb like Gretna. It's part of the urban core.

I am not going to continue this because I fail to see how crime in KC will impact the success or failure of GLM. It seems to be not really relevant to me.

I agree. It's just something obviously that will need to be watched and dealt with. We have some much invested in this, that it can't be something that continues. Last thing you want are incidents like this breaking out for example right when an event concludes at the Holland Center.

I worked summers and winter breaks during college at Younkers at the Crossroads during it's revival. Things like this slowly started happening with youths at the mall. Slowly but surely the mall got a reputation for "not being safe." It sent it to a slow death spiral.

Sure it is. My hope is that this was an isolated instance. We’ve had unfortunate similar disturbances in the Old Market with several that escalated into homicides over the past 5 or so years..but I don’t believe most folks would consider the Old Market dangerous..

I’ll also say, when the final 2 components of the Riverfront Redevelopment plan open next month, it will raise the profile of this even higher, and continued special attention will be given to the totality of these amenities..as it is becoming a premier point of destination for visitors and Omaha natives alike..

What is disturbing, is the uptick in homicides lately in Omaha. After an unusually quiet first 4 months of 2023, Omaha’s homicide count has now caught up with last year. The “long hot summer” continues..

Unfortunately…

Yeah it's been good to see the Old Market weather their issues. The only key difference here, is that the ones in the Old Market seem to happen much later, usually after the bars close.

Either way, I am hopeful this is a one time blip and if needed, appropriate measures are taken.

Des Moines city population is half that of Omaha, they are not of the same size. The city population is what matters when it comes to defining if a city feels urban and dense.

A majority suburban metro like that of KC, does not add anything special that makes a city large. Cookie cutter Strip malls, parklinglots, sprawl are not places worthy to visit; they are just bedding communities.

Here in Omaha, we would not wish to have all the suburban sprawl like other metros that fracture their urban core with usightly highways everywhere, with tiny isolated neighborhoods that are disjointed, with plenty of highway barriers and intersection barriers galore because of the suburb dominant mindset. Other truly large cities do not have an overeliance in highways in the urban core, yet they are more vibrant do to connectivity of people.

Why as a KC resident would you attempt to make these conflicts in GLM as a big deal and be quick to point them out? Despite these issues being pointed out in the other thread? LC has more heinous crimes to deal with.

Ummmn, I'm not a KC resident. Never have been. I do have relatives on my Dad's side in Missouri and Kansas but not limited to KC.

Born and raised in Omaha. Graduated from Omaha Central (yes, I went to high school downtown). The only time I haven't been a resident of Omaha is 4 years of college in Lincoln. I still live here. I do travel quite a bit for work, some to KC but certainly not even half my work trips are to there, but Omaha is my home base (office in Bellevue). Like many Omahan's, I have spent many small trips going there for Worlds of Fun, along with going to MLB, NFL and MLS.

I'd be willing to bet I have quite a few more years in Omaha than you do....

Ok, disregard myself for falsely accusing you as non-resident.
And yes I haven't lived in Omaha as long as you have, though myself coming from out of Omaha and living in other cities and growing up partially in Central Nebraska, has allowed me to appreciate what a special gem Omaha is. It doesn't matter if I visit other cities, I'll have fun in those cities, while not dealing with the associated baggage home.

Juveniles fighting! Oh goodness, I didn’t realize this was a new phenomenon. Back when I was in high school (Richard Nixon was president. Remember him? I didn’t think so.) juveniles fought pretty much every weekend, at and after high school football and basketball games. We even had fights in the hallways of my high school. I guess no one thought to take their fights downtown because there was no GLM back in the 1970s.
Kids will congregate where there is a reason to congregate. Testosterone being what it is, young men tend to get into trouble with other young men. We see it in nature with animals dueling over territory or females. Not excusing bad behavior. Most people outgrow it. None of this deters me from spending time downtown.

Police Chief Schmaderer was on KFAB this week talking about GLM and the issues there. I was surprised the youth fights there this weekend weren't the first. He said fights have happened several weekends in a row and there have been significant injuries. They are looking at making it where minors won't be allowed in the park after 8PM with a parent/adult.

Here's the link to listen:

Suspicious powder mailed to Jewish Community Center:
Police believe it was meant to scare

An envelope with powder mailed to a Jewish organization in Omaha was more than likely meant to scare the recipient, Omaha Police said Wednesday. It happened at the Jewish Community Center on the Jewish Federation of Omaha campus. The Omaha Fire Department and Postal Inspection Service determined the substance was not harmful.

I always chuckle at the way these corporations respond to situations or events that take place on their properties (ie, in this case it was assaulting an employee and theft at a Baker's):

https://www.ketv.com/article/omaha-shop ... e/45792798

Kroger was "saddened" by the event.

That's about as helpful as the non-meaningful "thoughts and prayers" that gets tossed around during the more tragic events that take place.

I will say this - one employee referenced having onsite police. As I've mentioned before when I worked PT at Target on 168th & Maple I felt they should have had off-duty cops walking the stores. Target bitches about $1 billion in annual shrinkage (aka theft) then hire ppl to protect your staff and property.

Such a fairly simple fix yet most places can't figure it out. One other "here's my two cents" on this. When I had previously mentioned the idea of Target having off duty police in their stores someone responded saying it would make customers uneasy, uncomfortable, etc. My opinion on this would be either a) adapt and get over it because it's simply a necessity at this point or b) stay home and shop online.

I don't know if their locations do, but the Gretna Hy-Vee has armed security guards with "Hy-Vee Security" printed on their bulletproof vests. They mostly chill at the front of the store.

Lately, Target seems to take the approach that they don't want to pay armed security to roam the sales floor and confront shoplifters and so they just bean-count it and if shrinkage exceeds a certain percent they simply close that location.

I have always been told the biggest cause of shrinkage was employees. That's hard to enforce with armed security guards. Employee theft adds up. However, with the smash and grab thing that's become a trend in recent years I think "customer" theft may exceed employee theft now.

Years ago (~2007) I spoke with the assistant manager at the Kum & Go that was near 72nd & Pacific. He said they were closing all of their Omaha locations east of 72nd. I asked why (thinking he'd cite robbery or low revenue) and he said employee theft and turnover in those locations was crazy high and corporate decided it wasn't worth the headache. Of course, that was just his heard-it-through-the-grapevine take on it.

Honestly a lot of the stores that |expletive| about theft just don't have enough staff. A 100,000 sqft operation with maybe 50 people on shift? Yeah, no wonder people just walk out with |expletive|. I go into bodegas here that have more people working and watching everything.

Nothing like checking out Tulsa on your own so that you can draw your own comparison. As for crime, I have never felt unsafe there but if you want a preview I made two threads on Tulsa's downtown, pictures and their riverfront, which is so similar to Omaha.

It looks like we had a situation in two Bakers stores, the store in 156th and the one in Saddle Creek; were targets of assault and shoplifting lifting incidents , done by the same 4 females. Glad they were uprehended.

Does Omaha defund the police or does Omaha continue to support the police with better pay and support?

Based on the crime stats, I'd say Omaha is doing a good job in dealing with crime.

We are being shown a great lesson around the country, what happens when you defund the police or when you increase support the police. Some places are enabling crime, while others are dealing with preventing measures to deal with crime.
