Fahey Street

I think Fahey was a great leader, and I am not opposed to naming a street in his honor.

BUT, I think it's ridiculous that the street sign features his full name. Just call it Fahey Street, plain and simple. There are other examples that bother me, too (Bob Boozer Blvd. for example). These are ridiculous names that take too long to say and that people are going to abbreviate anyway.

Almost every east/west street in Omaha is named after a person, but you don't see all their first names on there. That would be excessive and pointless.

True, we should rename all Martin Luther King Drives to just "King" Drive.

I'm not aware of any MLK "streets". It seems they usually are blvds, drives, parkways, etc. With that in mind a Mike Fahey blvd wouldn't sound so bad, but Mike Fahey St just doesn't roll off the tongue. Very awkward.

Exactly.

And, S33, I think there's a bit of a difference between local civic leaders and someone of the stature of Martin Luther King Jr. With him, you can simply call something "MLK whatever" and people know who it is.

Mike Fahey Boulevard or Drive has a better ring to it for some reason, if the full name is going to be used.

I agree but I think the full name distinguishes the significance rather than simply a last name. Helps preserve it's history in the face of antiquity. I really don't care, I'll never have a street named after me. =-)

So, are you advocating that all streets in Omaha have the first name of their namesake added to all street signs?

Also, I know he goes by Mike, but it sounds so casual and familiar. I'm sure the history books will say "Michael Fahey", so the street sign, if it is to feature his first name, should too.

No, I'm saying that if I had to endure two terms as Omaha's mayor with ungrateful know-it-all citizens labeling my projects "fahey's folly" etc., I would like my entire name on the sign so the naysayers could read it everytime they drive past the stadium they so vehemently opposed.
