www.wowt.com wrote:Former Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey may see his name near the new downtown baseball stadium.

Channel 6 News has confirmed his supporters are pushing an idea to rename several blocks of Webster Street -- 10th to 17th -- that run in front of the new stadium after Fahey.

In an interview with Channel 6 News, Fahey said, "I wasn't lobbying for it but it's a great honor and I certainly appreciate the recognition."

Union Pacific and Creighton University started the process to rename the street.

Cue the shi+ storm in 3...2...1...

:) Cool for him though. After getting kicked in the nuts at all of those stadium meetings he deserves it.

I agree. He wasn't a bad mayor and he was pretty enthusiastic. Another plus, he never asked us to "go asks our mothers". Prick...

I commend what the people are trying to do, but it feels too early.

While I personally think it's a great idea... I also think there are still too many members of the Yard Parking Industry with an axe to grind to make this a good political move. I think some sensitivity is in order. (Plus, some people will inevitably call it "Fahey Way"...)

I think a better idea would be to name one of the new zoo attractions after Fahey.

|expletive| those people. My BF's mom included. What political pressure is there to put on someone who's not in politics anymore? Well at least not the mayor anymore.

I was also thinking, if Daub built the Qwest Center, how come there is no Daub Street?

SO, is it correct to assume that this street will be a dead end street?

Renaming Webster from 10th to 17th is a bit too much. Why not just 10th to 12th, right by the stadium?

What about poor Mr. Webster? .....why snub him now? (now I need to go look up who he was and what he did to deserve a street name.)

You're right.....here's some more info I found....
John Lee Webster, an eminent attorney and public figure, arrived in Omaha in 1869 to practice his profession and soon engaged in politics. He served as a state legislator, chaired the 1875 constitutional convention, was city attorney in 1877 and led the Nebraska Republican Party delegation to two presidential conventions. His most memorable case, with Andrew Poppleton at his side, earned a prominent place in American constitutional law. Justice Dundy ruled in favor of Webster’s and Poppleton’s client, the incarcerated Chief Standing Bear of the Ponca tribe, in deciding that the “Indian is a person within the meaning of the laws of the United States,” and has the right to sue for a writ of habeas corpus in a federal court. However, he lost in later case seeking voting rights for Indians.

Renaming part of a street is stupid. Let's try and confuse out-of-towners coming to the ballpark with changing the name of 5 blocks of a street.

It's not like the other 3 street names around the stadium would change. :)

I think if they tried renaming 10th Daub Street that would suck.

Why would it be different than some of the other streets they rename where it keeps its real name, then there is a brown sign next to it that says Fahey Street?

Riverfront Drive has the dual signs. I don't remember who is on the other sign.

If out of towners are close enough to read a street sign, they surely would have already found the stadium. If they're using GPS to find the stadium, they'll just type in the name of the stadium to find it, not the street address.

I like the dual real + commemorative sign idea, like they've done elsewhere.

I just hope in a few years there will be a push to call a section of the streetcar route 'The Suttle Line'.

P.S. Anyone want to help me refute the morons commenting on this story? It's as if Fahey was the grinch that stole their taxes to pay for the stadium, which apparently sunk the local economy.

According to the updated 'Daub too' story the name changes would be permanent.

In that case, I think renaming the streets is a bad idea. The commemorative street signs would be enough to get the point across.

Why not simply name the field or air above it after Fahey, and the arena or convention floor after Daub....but maybe they've already sold those naming rights to the highest bidder to help pay-off the debt.

If you're going to name a street, it's smart to pick a lower traffic street like webster. Renaming 10th is never going to happen, and if it does they're insane. That would be like renaming 30th street. It's just confusing.

Council Approves 'Mike Fahey Street'

http://www.wowt.com/home/headlines/6968 ... tion=story
www.wowt.com wrote:The city council voted 4-2 in favor of the proposal requested by Creighton University and Union Pacific. Council members Garry Gernandt, Chris Jerram, Ben Gray, and Pete Festersen voted yes. Council members Jean Stothert and Franklin Thompson voted no.

Webster Street from 10th-to-17th street will have the new name. The street also runs along the new downtown baseball stadium.

I don't see why they wouldn't continue "Fahey St." all the way to 21st St where it terminates on Creighton's campus. Then Webster would just start on the west side of campus.

Ending at 17th St., that leaves an awkward 4 blocks of Webster St. just sitting there...

Creighton already closed off Webster Street at 17th Street. I think it was vacated when Creighton built the new Sokol Arena. (Wouldn't that be funny to have "Sokol Arena" located on "Fahey Street"???:lafcry:)

Webster starts up again at Florence Blvd for a couple of blocks towards Creighton's campus.

Mr. Fahey and the ballpark amount to spit in the wind compared to the accomplishment of John Lee Webster in the Standing Bear case. A serious wrong was righted. I would have picked a different street to be renamed.

that's dumb. 1) i don't think Fahey deserves his own street, regardless of how cool i think it is that he got done what he did, and 2) i can't believe that someone went to the trouble to write and record such a lame knock off of sesame street. The city was running fine while he was in office, and they forget he was re-elected, so the "someone else has to pay" line isn't exactly the case. Understandably, there are things that he pushed that will end up having repercussions after leaving office, but they make him seem like one of the guys on spy vs spy, and that he's just trying to be sneaky on all accounts.

Webster Street remains intact throughout the rest of Omaha. The point of naming this particular stretch was because it runs directly in front of the new ballpark.
