Shocking!! We are so used to them demolishing a smaller, old building for skyscraper, not a medium-size skyscraper for a mega skyacraper. That is amazing. That is what I love about NYC and Chicago: There are always new buildings going up -- at least somewhere on the skyline. Almost like their thirst will never be satisfied, the skyline just needs to keep getting bulkier & bigger each year. In Omaha, we wait & wait, then a 10 story building is announced, and we do cartwheels.
I can get pushed out because I'm "too much" for some. Then, an observer of me comes suddenly swooping in to "fill my shoes." People are always more accepting of the new one, because their feathers aren't truly ruffled by them. (Yawn) I can count on it every time.

As a former Chicago-based JPMorgan Chase employee, I took many work trips to New York, working primarily at 1CMP (One Chase Manhattan Plaza) in the financial district, but also worked a couple of times up in Midtown at 270 Park Ave. The thing about both of these significant JPMC buildings (60 stories and 52 stories respectively) is that they were both completed in 1961 and there is no hiding that fact. Chase Tower in Chicago (60 stories) was opened in 1969. JPMC doesn't have a gleaming, splashy, and modern 21st century building in New York (or Chicago) that rivals the building of it's main banking rival, Bank of America (55 stories, opened in 2009).

I'm not surprised that JPMC is doing this, but I do have mixed feelings over demolishing a relatively young and still functional building.

I agree with you. It almost feels like they're almost removing the Seagram Building from the NYC cityscape -- although their skyscraper is not as significant & noteworthy as the Seagram Building, of course. Still, it has that simple beauty of International Style. I wonder how they are going to dismantle it all safely, as traffic & people continue around it? I think this is the first time I've seen this type of thing done.

Here's a picture I found of it: http://images.skyscrapercenter.com/buil ... has-1b.jpg

They should just replace it with this as Omaha did:

The newspaper/ad dispenser boxes are such a nice touch too. More please!

I have wanted the orange state office building to be torn down for so long, as it sits in to prominent of a location for its looks. If it was farther away from the mall and core I could maybe handle it more. Really a shame it was built in that location, it would never be put there now.

The decision to put a building that height in the heart of downtown seems like something you would see in Downtown Sioux City, or maybe even Sioux Falls, but not in cities the size of Des Moines or Omaha or larger. Im not thrilled about it either. At least it feels "urban", though. And, the building has nice lines & patterns, I think.

Lol , yes Sioux City it would be perfect! That’s such a great block right in between the mall and Old Market, it’s not even hilly. Perfect spot for apartments or condo high rise. Even a cool 10 story building I would take.

It is soooo Downtown Sioux City!

With our conversation, I wish I could just take a crane, and pick it up, and move it off to the edge of downtown more. It is a prime, prime lot...almost calling out for a new high rise.

it's so hard to comprehend the size and scale of New York City. Those buildings are absolutely massive, the square footage of office space boggles my mind. We were there a few years back and I took like 200 pictures of just buildings. I'd give my right eye to have one or two of their crappy medium-talls here.

It's mesmerizing to walk through. And the MoO tower would rank 97th tallest in the city if it were there. Unreal.

I'm excited to watch 175 Park Avenue rise next, though I do wish they'd add a spire like in this image
