UP HQ Building
Anyone see the auction sign on the old UP HQ building? I noticed it the other day while going to the Creighton game. Is the city auctioning off the building or something?

They are auctioning office furniture, etc. Not the building.

I think they will continue to use the building. Thus the reason for the underground tunnel.

As said above, the auction is for pretty much anything that isn't attached to the building.
The tunnel doesn't go to that building, it connects to the garage.
I going to put my money on.... BOOM, old UP building will be imploded.

Actually, according to the auction site, it appears that items affixed to the exterior of the building will be auctioned (such as the letters spelling out 'Union Pacific' on the corners and even the logo above the main door).futrecndvlpr wrote:As said above, the auction is for pretty much anything that isn't attached to the building.

I'm hearing too that the building will be gone. Not sure on implosion being the preferred method, but this is contrary to the original agreement when the City acquired the block the new HQ sits on, which stated that the old HQ would be turned over to the city and the city would be free to sell/lease it. Apparently, the building is either in worse condition than we've been led to believe, or (more likely) someone else wants that prime real estate for new construction.
Any feelers for who that might be? Hopefully, it's not another parking garage.....

I hope the building comes down because there are a couple of additions that make the building look like a 60's boondoggle. There are some exterior moldings that would be worth saving(perhaps for the new building that would rise in its place).

The building should ABSOLUTELY NOT be torn down.
No building should ever be torn down while there are still surface lots in downtown Omaha.
However, if it were, say, being torn down for a 50 story skyscraper, that would be a different story

Yes if we do lose a historic building to a two story brick box, I will move!

Let's pave paradise. Put up a parking lot.StreetsOfOmaha wrote:The building should ABSOLUTELY NOT be torn down.

I say blow it up. Junk. More sites to choose from when that one company needs a site to build a new skyscraper. Speeds up the process.
If there was some architectural significance to the building I would agree but there is nothing significant at all in that building besides a few trimmings that could be saved. I think the turuqois/aqua panels are pretty!

I agree with projectman. There is nothing exciting about that building at all and it'll look more appealing to those looking to construct a new establishment if they don't have to waste time with, or pay for, the demolition of a...um...a bo...a boo....boondoggle? Boondoggle.
