Prosper Omaha

New development plan from the chamber of commerce. It is supposed to build off of the GO! campaign, they are calling it more ambitious. A quick pdf overview I found. http://www.selectgreateromaha.com/Omaha ... Letter.pdf

Fourteen months after launching a $23 million fundraiser for an economic development campaign, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce has raised more than $20 million, a campaign record.

The monetary commitments came from nearly 200 investors, 63 of them new donors.

The Prosper Omaha campaign aims to, during a five-year period starting in 2014, land 300 projects, create $3 billion in capital investment and create or retain 12,000 jobs above the area's median wage.

Officials reported Monday that the chamber's economic development arm so far in 2014 has landed 20 new projects totaling 1,646 jobs (1,277 new and 369 retained) and $147 million in new capital investment.

Chamber President David Brown counted among the “landed” projects: the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, a $93 million facility to employ more than 800 people; expansions of Tyson Fresh Meats and Gavilon Ingredients LLC, which bring a combined 150 new jobs to Council Bluffs and $14 million in new investment; and the small business expansion of Omaha Culinary Tours.

I am resurrecting this thread since the Chamber recently released an update on this economic development campaign. They almost met their projects landed goal, exceeded the goal for investment, and maybe hit the jobs goal (they didn't clarify if they were higher than median wage jobs). Additionally, the Chamber is rolling out its next five year campaign as Prosper 2.0, with similar and additional goals. New to the plan are goals focused on tech and the Chamber's Kitchen Counsel. Additionally, there is a goal to have a "modern transit system" funded and under construction, although they do not identified what mode of transportation that may entail.

Chamber's blog post on the conference held to report to investors on Prosper Omaha and the introduction of Prosper 2.0

Good for them. It's good to hear their report. Or, should I say "boast?" #WeDoBoast

The transportation system: I'll believe it when I see it. :)
I can get pushed out because I'm "too much" for some. Then, an observer of me comes suddenly swooping in to "fill my shoes." People are always more accepting of the new one, because their feathers aren't truly ruffled by them. (Yawn) I can count on it every time.

The fact that they made inclusive hiring/promotion a priority is HUGE for Omaha. Part of the reason Omaha struggles with its image is because we have the pesky NE attached to our name and with it comes the “Not for everyone” reputation that the state continues to uphold by refusing to protect minority rights.

Fremont is having a town wide catharsis right now about the xenophobia that permeates that town.
