Local Alumni in the MLB

Did we have a thread somewhere on local players that made it to the Big Leagues?

I don't know if I posted this before - but Ruf made ESPN's top 10 plays last week for a diving catch in short CF!

Spencer Schwellenbach called up to Atlanta Braves

Former Nebraska standout and MLB 2nd Round Pick, Spencer Schwellenbach, has been called up to the Atlanta Braves. Schwellenbach is set to make his MLB debut and start at pitcher for the Braves on Wednesday May 29, 2024. Schwellenbach was a dual threat player for the Huskers between 2019-2021; however, after being drafted to Atlanta, the team converted him to a pitcher full time. The former Big Ten player of the year gets his shot in the show just 3 days before his 24th birthday.

On Wednesday, June 12 the Braves play at the Orioles.

The scheduled starting pitchers are Cade Povich for the Orioles and Spencer Schwellenbach for the Braves.

Both are former Husker pitchers.

Cool to see this happen

For 2 former Huskers, MLB pitching duel was an 'awesome' and 'special moment'

The first-ever matchup of past Huskers starting against each other at the MLB level didn’t disappoint Wednesday night at Camden Yards in Baltimore. Braves right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach and Orioles lefty Cade Povich each threw exactly six innings and 89 pitches in a true pitchers duel the home team eventually won 4-2.

Omaha Roncalli alumni Alec Bohm is in the MLB home run derby tonight. The photo below I took in 2015 when he competed in the 2015 MiLB homerun derby at Werner Park.

Alec Bohm made it to the semi finals, and ended up tying Hernandez in the semi finals, but lost in a swing-off.

Winner now faces KC Royal Bobby Witt Jr.
