New anchor store (Dillard’s) announced for Empire Mall, will expand former Younkers space

Fashion retailer Dillard's will locate a new store in the 100,000-square-foot anchor store space, and expand it by about 40,000 square feet in construction starting next year. The store is planned to open in late fall 2019.

According to their website there is nothing in the Younkers or Sears stores at this time. And there is nothing for SDak on the Dillard's website.

Gotcha thanks. We are in Sioux Falls at the end of June for a hockey tournament and always stay near the mall. I remember last summer there didn't seem to be any action near the old Younkers.

Yeah I haven't been up there since last July when I moved and not to the Empire in years.

I was there this weekend. It doesn't look like anything is going on at either of the closed anchor stores. They do seemed to have done some upgrading though. I remember carpet in the mall 2 years ago (not sure on last year), but it was really nice tile flooring throughout that kind of looked like marble. They are also building more retail at the mall in the parking lot on the 41st St side near Shirley. Just moving dirt but looks sizable.

It was just announced and made official by the Empire Mall management that Dillard will be opening in the former Younkers store in the fall of 2023.

That's really good news. Dillards seems to be doing well. They are also expanding their Lincoln, Ne store by expanding into the space next to it (which is also a former Younkers store).

Just came across this. It got delayed again. Now opening fall of 2024.

Dillard's, the major fashion retailer, has once again delayed its opening at the Empire Mall in Sioux Falls.

The store's arrival in South Dakota was first announced in December 2018 and was set to open in 2019. In August 2022, the department store confirmed it was still coming to the mall with a target opening of this coming fall.

Now, the opening has been pushed back once again to the spring of 2024.

Julie Guymon, a spokesperson with the company, said these things tend to happen sometimes, but would not provide a reason as to why.

I’ve been to this mall several times over the years while in Sioux Falls for work. It’s a good sized mall probably as big as Westroads or even a little bigger. Dillard’s is a nice catch for Sioux Falls.
