Hwy 36 84th to 108th
What happened to the widening project in this area? It looks like it was started some years back, but stopped in the middle of the project. I have tried to Google different items with no luck. Any details on when it started, why it stopped and if it will be resumed?

You mean this "project"? These photos were taken in 2010, 10 years ago.

Exactly. Thanks. It has been a while since work was done. I wonder if this was something in conjunction with the North Omaha Freeway as sort of an early beltway project? HWY 36 is still a good route to Eppley for people from Northeast Nebraska from 275. It would be nice to see it completed someday. Possibly some issues about this leading to Truck and heavier traffic down 30th Street?

I wish I could remember where I read this, but I read that 36 was at one point considered an alternative to West Dodge as linking Fremont to the Interstate and they did some prep work for it, then once Dodge was officially the chosen route they kinda lost interest

That makes sense.ProgKingHughesker wrote: Sat May 23, 2020 7:17 pmI wish I could remember where I read this, but I read that 36 was at one point considered an alternative to West Dodge as linking Fremont to the Interstate and they did some prep work for it, then once Dodge was officially the chosen route they kinda lost interest
I'm trying to think back when I first remember the additional lanes, and it was probably not that many years after I first moved here.

i don’t know when they first appeared but i remember these lanes being there in the late, if not mid-70s.
My old signature got too old. So old it was getting almost as old me as me. Yeah, it was up there in years.

Your timeline is correct. They were constructed when Cunningham Lake was built.

This choice of HWY 36 to Fremont makes sense as it was the old fur trader trail (later called the Mormon trail) and once you get out of the Mill Creek valley, its a pretty smooth sloping drive to 84th and then you have the Papio creek, but its still kind of small at that point, and you have a pretty easy run to the Elkhorn. Then you have the Rawhide creek (a problem in that in places, the valley is maybe a foot above the normal level of the creek, though at Hwy 36, its not. They shut that hwy down for flooding of the Rawhide pretty easily. Once past that, its a pretty flat track to Fremont.
