owh commenters
It's been quite a while since I read any comments to owh stories. Glad to see the crazy people are still available to bloviate. No one approaches Diane Marie Hayes but there is one guy who I am sure is sitting in his basement, tin hat, dimly lit, pouring over the latest facts, ready to go.
Holy cow, what a society we live in.

Re: owh commenters
The continued existence of these comment sections shows Lee Enterprise only wants to squeeze every cent they can out of our market with no regard for how they do so. They reflect horribly on Omaha as a community and contribute nothing of constructive value.

These people might even be your neighbor. Unprecedented stupidity is circulating though every community.
Unfortunately it appears they may also have the loudest voices in real life and in internet life.
Dam shame.

Re: owh commenters
For those who weren't around when the "Omaha Convention Center/Arena" was proposed Diane Marie Hayes was a constant commenter on pretty much every owh story about it. Her arguments were, in no particular order,
1) It will fail
2) Who would want to come to Omaha?
3) Omaha is too small to attract events/meetings/conventions
4) Any other city is better/has actual things to do/isn't as boring/you get the idea
5) No one will want to drive all the way downtown
6) It can't work
7) If it's such a good idea why doesn't some corporation pay for it
It will be a boondogle
9) It will only benefit a few people
She wasn't the only one commenting this way but she was the most consistent and persistent.
I labeled it as the Omaha Convention Center/Arena because the owh refused to call it the Qwest Center. It was for a time their belief that naming rights=bad and they continued to call it that way past the time when they looked really foolish. Even some of their writers felt that way but the word came down from the top that they were banned from using the name Qwest Center. Cue Harold Andersen.

Re: owh commenters
These Omaha World Herald posters might even include a couple of clowns who have often shared their stupidity and spread misinformation in this forum! We had a couple of really really bad ones around here for awhile that seem to have gone away either on their own or with some help from the forum moderators. These posters believe much like their beloved Fox News that if they tell lies and disinformation often and consistently enough the lies become truth. You can see that they see themselves as soldiers for the cause and that their mission is to paint like graffiti their lies and misinformation in comment sections and forums all over the internet.Busguy2010 wrote: Mon Mar 22, 2021 4:06 am These people might even be your neighbor. Re: owh commenters
The tantrum that the OWH threw over the Qwest Center had to with them losing out on naming rights.

Re: owh commenters
The rank & file journalists thought it was pathetic but the upper echelon put their foot down. I have to believe that over 99% of Omahans laughed at them & ignored the label & just went with Qwest Center. That made the owh look even more childish.

Re: owh commenters
Lol, I totally forgot about the OW-H refusing to print the words "Qwest Center Omaha", but I never knew they were in the running for the naming rights. I thought it was just some stupid little hissy fit they were throwing. Something about a publicly funded venue should not have a corporate name on it or something.

I wanted to call it the “LSOC” center. Long Suffering Overtaxed Citizens center. Let’s all be real, neither Qwest or CHI paid for it and we did.

Re: owh commenters
Not entirely true. CHI is paying $23.6 million for the 20-year naming rights. Not sure how much of that goes toward paying off the $216 million bond issue and/or operating costs. The other $291 million was provided by private donors. With the name “CHI Health Center Arena” we should all be able to get our C19 shots there.bigredmed1 wrote: Tue Mar 23, 2021 8:05 pm I wanted to call it the “LSOC” center. He said "They are some big, ugly red brick buildings"
...and then they were gone.

The comments on the OWH site are an absolute cesspool and I have no idea why or how they let it continue to fester. Maybe 1 in 10 on average is something worthy of a platform. The rest of them are off-topic, conspiratorial nonsense that doesn't deserve to be read. Simple-minded nonsense and completely unnecessary.

The commentators must just CTRL+F to the comment button, because it's buried under like 100 pictures at the end of every article.

FWIW there's always a direct link to comments directly under every headline when on mobile, at least inmy browser on an iPhone.jessep28 wrote: Thu Mar 25, 2021 1:07 am The commentators must just CTRL+F to the comment button, because it's buried under like 100 pictures at the end of every article.
Edit: same on the desktop, turns out.

It's definitely Facebook-ish. I wish these people would have to say this |expletive| to each other in person.

I didn't realize the OWH still had comments, I thought they did the right thing and turned those off years ago?

After all those stupid comments, I wouldn't be surprised if they do shut down the comments sections.

Re: owh commenters
The bickering does drive website traffic and ad impressions,.so there is incentive to keep comment sections around.
The WSJ comment sections aren't much better, and the retail price for an online only subscription is close to $40 a month!

For as good as an overall publication as the WSJ actually is, their coments section and editorial board are literally the two worst things on the internet that require a paid subscription. And that includes all of the pr0n.jessep28 wrote: Wed Sep 15, 2021 5:17 pmThe WSJ comment sections aren't much better, and the retail price for an online only subscription is close to $40 a month!
