Ramp meter traffic signals?

Post by damonhynes »

Remember those? I recall them on I-680 @ Pacific, Center and maybe one other interchange, beginning in ~1976. They still exist in other areas, it was a discussion on a traffic signal FB page and the general consensus is that they're useless.

They aren't useless. They do improve throughput and cadence of traffic. They are irksome, and a solution to something that is better solved by not building everything around cars.

It seems odd that Omaha had them and now does not. They seem more fitting in a city that has traffic issues, which Omaha has a lot more of now than 40+ years ago. Not that I want them, but they would be more fitting now. On eastbound Dodge expressway seems like a fitting place for them.

Minneapolis has them.

I remember the one on Center st, it was already not in use anymore when I saw it 1985 but the pole and sign were still standing next to the road when you got on 680 southbound. Then it was removed altogether a few years later. I know Minneapolis has them as they have much heavier traffic than Omaha. Can’t recall if KC has any.

Phoenix has lots of control lights letting only a couple of cars on the interstate at a time. Timer controlled so they turn off in low traffic conditions.

Seattle has them, too, on I-5 and I-405.
