Multiple agencies unite to move autotransformer, maintain grid reliability
OPPD - Omaha Public Power District
In Spring 2022, OPPD replaced the oldest transformer in its service territory, located at a Northwest Omaha substation. The new autotransformer had to be transported from the factory in Alabama to Omaha by rail, and then to the substation using specialized heavy-haul transportation systems. Bringing the new transformer online was a proactive move that maintains grid reliability.
Multiple agencies were involved, including the Nebraska Department of Transportation, Nebraska State Patrol, Commonwealth Electric Co., Patriot Crane & Rigging, and OxBo Mega Transport Solutions.
The specialized heavy-haul system is more than 400 feet long, has 216 tires and weighs 1.2 million pounds, including the transformer. The rig traveled less than 10 mph, arriving at its destination eight hours after embarking.
