Re: Nebraska Tourism
I was down to the KC-area and back again for Thanksgiving. I saw a Visit Omaha commercial on TV while in KC and on the way back I saw a Sarpy County tourism billboard off I-29 by Mound City, MO.
It's interesting seeing ads for your own city.

I’m not sure what good billboards do but it’s nice to hear that Omaha is advertising in other media markets. I know that Sioux Falls and Des Moines have heavily advertised in the Omaha TV market this past summer.

I didn't think it was a good ad campaign from the beginning. Glad to see they dropped it

Re: Nebraska Tourism
Despite criticisms of the slogan, it at least did not hurt tourism or people's perception of Nebraska. I know the proponent is attributing the positive results on the slogan, but it was really just part of a revised campaign:thenewguy wrote: Wed Feb 07, 2024 7:52 am I didn't think it was a good ad campaign from the beginning. https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/02/05 ... cial-says/Ricks said the motto was successful in increasing interest in visiting the state, saying that a survey of tourists in the target market for Nebraska showed interest rising from 19% in 2019 to 39% more recently.
...
In the last “Portrait of American Travelers” report last fall, Ricks said that Nebraska had risen to a tie for 41st — up from 50th — as a state travelers were interested in visiting.
My only concern with the current administration is that if the Tourism Commission comes back to the NE Department of Economic Development, we are going to get bland advertising. Nebraska's new slogan: Nebraska, the state where you live, work and play.

If they are going to ignore all the cultural and touristy things of value, and pander to the rural image, they may as well go all in.

Re: Nebraska Tourism
I'm glad they dropped the It's not for everyone line. They meant it as tongue and cheek, but people took it literally. When outsiders already believe preconceived misconceptions they look at this campaign as if Nebraska gave up and admitted there is nothing to do. Nebraska needs to learn how to toot their horn, not beat around the bush in a bashful or playful way.
I was shocked when we moved to Florida how many people have NO CLUE where Nebraska is it. This rings true with Garrett's line :Nebraska: you’ve heard of us, right?

I thought it was a great slogan.
This state isn't for everyone, it's honest and it appeals to the people they want here. It was a great messaging tool.

Re: Nebraska Tourism
In my time down here in Mexico people often ask where I’m from. When I say “Omaha, Nebraska” I’m surprised how many people from Canada and the U.S. respond: “Omaha. I think we drove through there once” or “Omaha, I think we stayed there one night on our way to …”. Of course I also hear “Nebraska, that’s one boring state to drive across.”

Understanding Tourism Nebraska's Sleeping Giant
The tourism industry is Nebraska's third largest economic driver, behind agriculture and manufacturing. The industry includes restaurants, hotels, destinations, activities, unique businesses, natural wonders, vibrant cities and off-the-beaten-path towns. Several agencies working together to make it successful. It’s something easily taken for granted, like water from the tap. You just turn it on and know it will come out. But…what happens if you don’t devote time and resources to tourism and bring awareness to it? The sleeping giant stays asleep and the state economy suffers the consequences. In “Understanding Tourism,” people who work in the industry shed light on the importance of supporting tourism. Nebraskans, whether they think so are not, are affected by tourism, therefore making it in their best interest to see it succeed.
When people visit Nebraska, residents’ taxes are subsidized. And, when attractions and unique businesses open in areas, local residents also partake, making their quality of life better. The Nebraska Tourism Industry, along with it’s partner agencies work together to promote Nebraska as a destination. One way they do that is with the Nebraska Passport Program, where people can pick up a booklet and earn prizes to make as many stops as possible throughout a summer. This helps promote destinations people may not have know existed and also boosts business for those who take part.
With proper handling of resources and continued effort put into promoting the industry, the giant will awaken, and Nebraska’s tourism potential will continue to succeed.
