The family-friendly themed entertainment destination is coming to Bonner Springs, Kansas, and is expected to break ground later this year. Mattel Adventure Park is already under construction at its first location in Glendale, Arizona.

The Kansas City theme park is expected to feature themed Hot Wheels roller coasters such as the Hot Wheels Bone Shaker: The Ultimate Ride and the Hot Wheels Twin Mill Racer.

Also coming are attractions featuring Thomas the Train, specifically Thomas & Friends: World of Sodor, which includes five family-friendly experiential attractions and rides including a dedicated indoor play space for little adventurers.

Mattel Adventure Park Kansas City will also be home to the larger-than-life Barbie Beach House, featuring an interactive retail experience where fans can build their customized Barbie set in the Barbie Dream Closet Experience, which uses hologram technology to bring Barbie to life right before guests’ eyes.

Organizers say the attraction will feature a Barbie-themed flying theater and rooftop restaurant and bar.

Parkgoers can also check out He-Man vs. Skeletor Laser Tag, Masters of the Universe, in which fans can fight for Eternia in a massive laser tag arena in the likeness of the iconic Castle Grayskull fortress.

Organizers also said Mattel Adventure Park will offer a mini golf experience featuring 18 holes inspired by Magic 8 Ball, Pictionary and other beloved Mattel games, plus a larger-than-life custom climb UNO structure that delivers nostalgia and adventure for all ages.

“Mattel Adventure Park Kansas City will bring our iconic brands to life with epic roller coasters, family-friendly attractions, an immersive theatre, themed dining, and so much more,” Josh Silverman, Chief Franchise Officer at Mattel, said. “We are thrilled to expand these themed entertainment destinations and invite new fans to experience the world of Mattel in all-new ways as they create lasting memories with loved ones.”

“We are proud and excited to announce Kansas City, Kansas, as the second themed entertainment destination location for Mattel Adventure Park, an Epic Resort Destinations licensing partnership with Mattel,” Mark Cornell, President of Epic Resort Destinations, said. “We are bringing Mattel’s powerhouse brands to life through state-of-the-art technology and engaging experiences. This new destination is sure to provide infinite fun for the whole family.”

I’ve looked into the one they’re building in Arizona. It seemed to only have a few rides/attractions. This one seems to have a lot more going into it.

The KC Star is reporting it will cost $487 million to build.

That's not even one tenth of a Nebraska Crossing Village, how nice could it be?

Let's be honest, all future developments will pale in comparison to Nebraska Crossing Village......

Just another reference point for how crazy Nebraska Crossing is getting...there has to be theme park involved at this point, right? I mean if the proposal has ballooned to $5 billion and there is no theme park, what are we even doing? Haha.

Anyway, this project is interesting. Mattel has some well known, very popular brands. This should be very popular for the families with young kids, similar to the Lego Land theme parks.

I'm surprised they announced a second location when the first one is still not open yet. Even so, still pretty cool. More of a themed resort then a theme park.

Since KC gets Mattel, can Omaha land Legoland? They only have Legoland theme parks in FL, NY, and CA. So a Central location is very fitting. Nebraska Crossing....here is your chance to make a "cold call" LOL!

BONNER SPRINGS, Kan. (KCTV) - At Monday’s meeting, the Bonner Springs City Council unanimously approved a development agreement between the city and the developer behind the Mattel Adventure Park.

In it, the timeline for the park has been pushed back. Vertical construction has to start by October 2027 with the project substantially completed by October 2030.

The agreement goes on to say the park must be open no later than May 2031.

“There were just a lot of decisions that had to be made,” said Megan Gilliland, the Economic Development Manager for the City of Bonner Springs, on discussions between city staff and the developer. “I know the developer has said that there have been things including tariffs and things like that that are going to affect the project. The construction materials and things like that. They had to get some of those things worked out. We just wanted to make sure that the city had the incentives in place, and we knew what we were being asked for specifically.”

Back in April 2024, the Bonner Springs City Council adopted an ordinance creating the 118th and State STAR Bond District. Over the last several months, the City of Bonner Springs legal counsel and the development team have been working to complete a Development Agreement that sets the terms for the future STAR Bonds project.

The terms in the Development Agreement lay out the project timelines, financial obligations, public infrastructure improvements, and legal framework to guarantee the project is constructed and completed.

In a presentation to the council, developers outlined the preliminary budget for the park, which totaled nearly $540 million. Preliminary sales projections estimate over $191 million in annual sales. The also highlighted the requested incentives, including $175 million in STAR Bonds.

The agreement also provided insight into what the future park could look like.

In the definition of amusement park in the agreement, it’s stated “to include approximately 150,000 square feet of indoor space and approximately 15 acres of outdoor ride area, which will feature approximately 750-foot dual zip lines, an approximately 10-acre man-made lake, and lakefront boat rentals.”

Developers not only highlighted retail, restaurant, and office space in their presentation, but also noted a year-round holiday attraction and rainforest attraction would be part of the development.

They said there would be room for growth on the property they will soon acquire. Now that the development agreement has been passed, the developer will have up to 45 days to start the process to acquire the land.
