Western Sarpy County to expand transportation network as region grows
SARPY COUNTY, Neb. (WOWT) - The Metropolitan Area Planning Agency is introducing its Western Sarpy County Transportation Enhancement Plan, also known as WE-STEP. Live now, is the enhancement plan’s website for public feedback, which will be available online from March 25 to April 8. WE-STEP is described as a transportation strategy to identify a future regional transportation network and how it will fit in with plans for development. MAPA is working with the city officials in Gretna, Papillion, and Springfield to execute the planning and project.
“We’ve really got to get out ahead of it or we’re just going to be reacting and responding instead of proactive,” said Paula Dennison, Gretna’s city administrator. “The roads from Gretna going back east and north and south they don’t stop at Gretna corporate limits.” It’s a plan that takes the region into 2050. “That growth will happen in stages, so what the plan will provide is a framework,” said Jim Boerner, MAPA transportation planner. “Some of these roads don’t exist, some of them are gravel, so they’ll go from unpaved to a reasonable design that meets the current need but it allows for the expansion to the future need if they see that.” The goal of the online public meeting is to find common ground and establish consistency. “To have that base agreement between communities to say this is how we’re going to go about building our road,” said Boerner. After community input and progress meetings, it’s expected a final plan will go before planning boards and city councils in the summer.

Sarpy County, Bellevue, Papillion working together to improve road network
BELLEVUE, Neb. (WOWT) - As the Omaha metro grows, Sarpy County’s roadways are seeing more traffic -- and the county says it has its eyes set on accessibility. “It’s been in the county and city’s vision for a very long time,” Bellevue Mayor Rusty Hike said. “We’re finally getting some movement on it.” It’s a teamwork effort between the county and the Cities of Bellevue and Papillion. The area being examined is between Capehart and Platteview Roads and between 36th and 72nd Streets, south of Offutt Air Force Base.
“You got a two-lane highway without shoulders on it, and for the most part it’s unsafe and you got a lot of hills, a lot of curves,” Hike said. “So, we’re cleaning that stretch up and making it a safer means of travel.” Officials hope with better roads comes increased economic development. Sarpy County Commissioner Don Kelly tells 6 News that includes both residential and commercial space. Officials don’t yet have a formal design or construction timeline; a final plan hasn’t yet been adopted by either Papillion or Bellevue city leaders
Despite that, the county says it wants your input. “We’ll get together, we will all have input, and we will all have opinions,” Kelly said. “Then, we’ll fold into those opinions and thoughts.” The open-house-style meeting is set for next Monday, April 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. inside the Sarpy County Board Room at 1210 Golden Gate Drive, in the same area as the county courthouse. The county says the meeting will include route recommendations.
