Omaha Metro population likely at or over 1 million mark now-
This is great news for the Metro and State-
From the W-H piece:
“While 2 million is a fun landmark, it likely does not carry a lot of significance, Drozd said. But it does bode well for the Omaha metro area’s population topping the 1 million mark when more local population estimates are released in March.
That likely would be meaningful, Drozd said, as retailers, food chains and other businesses often use 1 million as a population threshold when deciding where to locate.
“We can now get into that conversation,” Drozd said.”..

LOL..
I’ll double down that it’s at 1 million or slightly over MSA wise when the 2024 estimates are released in March

If they've already revised several years from this decade positively in this estimate, I think 1MM is all but a guarantee.

Glad to see this. There is no way the metro isn’t over 1 million with all the growth we have seen. Said it before, but I think the lower number from the past few years was way off.

Completely agree, and have been saying that for years. The “eyeball test” doesn’t lie.. But the prior Census estimate lowballing hasskinzfan23 wrote: Thu Dec 19, 2024 1:49 pm Glad to see this. That would definitely be an aspirational “get” for the Omaha metro

I'd personally rather a Microcenter. I'd be OK with a newer style IKEA though.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Thu Dec 19, 2024 4:22 pmThat would definitely be an aspirational “get” for the Omaha metro…

We've got both IKEA and Microcenter here in Detroit. We might go to IKEA once a year. I'm at Microcenter about once or twice a month. Sometimes more. They are an incredible store. Brilliant employees, stellar service, huge selection, great prices. I actually asked a Microcenter manager if they had plans for Omaha, just on a whim. He said one way to push the process along is to email corporate and ask. Then ask your friends to email also.

I don't think I'd have the need for a Microcenter more than once every 5 years, but I'm not doing anything with computers. I don't game on a PC and I get sit on one all day for work so anything outside of that is off a computer. However, I'd take some cheap furniture and stuff from IKEA several times a year.

I've done this. The response is pretty generic.Bob from Omaha wrote: Mon Jan 13, 2025 8:36 am I actually asked a Microcenter manager if they had plans for Omaha, just on a whim. He said one way to push the process along is to email corporate and ask. Then ask your friends to email also.
On another note, I asked one of the guys in KC maybe a year ago, and he had heard Omaha was actually next. Its been a while and no news so maybe not. Not that I really thought it was likely.
You need furniture multiple times a year? Maybe don't buy cheap stuff so it lasts? Or are you furnishing places?Stan wrote: Mon Jan 13, 2025 4:18 pm I don't think I'd have the need for a Microcenter more than once every 5 years, but I'm not doing anything with computers. Regardless for me: I don't always need computer stuff that often but the last year was 2 new servers for the home, and like 60TB of hard drives. A new CPU because hot deal at a Microcenter, with the motherboard, and RAM to support it. And then another hard drive along with a new case to fit all the drives my main machine has. A macbook for travel.
2 new routers to get 1gps all over the condo, a new OLED TV for the 1st floor, a new receiver for eArc over Arc, a PS5 so I could check out games not on the other things. New floor speakers and a subwoofer...
Yeah, I buy too much electronics stuff. I am 100% their demographic!

See, hardly anything of what you bought interest me and I'm not the demographic for a microcenter. I don't store massive amounts of information and just stream content and store what I need in the cloud. (Totally understand the risk there, but I'll survive). PS5 bought directly from Sony when they first came out - tv, Deco mesh wifi and sound equipment from the Mart or Amazon.Athomsfere wrote: Wed Jan 15, 2025 11:32 amI've done this. The Mart hits most of the points of what we need though already for furniture and appliances. We are currently in the market for a new sectional and bedroom furniture for my kids rooms. We've also used the mart in the past 5 years for a new oven, washer, and dish washer. Our dryer is basic enough that I'll keep replacing the thermal fuses for $20 every couple years.
It's ok that I'm not the demographic for a microcenter. I'm sure it would appeal to a huge amount of people, especially if you look at the recent Reddit post in /Omaha discussing it. I hope you people get one. I'd just be more apt to walking into an IKEA than a microcenter...even if it's just to check the place out.

Why not both a Microcenter and an Ikea since we will the million mark? I think we can put Macy's on the "Never Happening" shelf given they are currently at risk of closing their NYC Flagship storeita wrote: Wed Jan 15, 2025 12:00 pm

Re: Omaha Metro population likely at or over 1 million mark now-
Macy's is closing a ton of stores. Kohl's too.
As for Microcenter, they currently have 29 stores. They are unlike most stores that sell electronics. Last time I looked they did over $2.4 Billion in sales and that was when they had 24 stores. That's over $100 million per store average. A cursory look at their locations gives me the impression that one million is not their tipping point. Maybe a few Ohio cities but that's because they are based in the Columbus metro. Could happen but the odds are long.
It's a similar story with IKEA. They have about 50 stores and again, a cursory look suggests that the million mark isn't a tipping point. It could happen but the odds are pretty long.
There were hints that IKEA was looking to open another store in the Detroit metro a few years ago but nothing came of it.
About Macy's. There are quite a few here and we've gone there over the years. There are also Lord & Taylor, Saks & Nordstrom and some others. Not as much for me as for my wife & daughter. Macy's has good sales. The thing is, I was really happy when I saw there is a Von Maur not too far from us. I always liked shopping there. The staff is very good and helpful. In Omaha and when we moved here a salesperson would call my wife when her favorite brand of panty hose are on sale.

sorry, I wasn't serious about Macy's. Apologies for the diversion.
