Younkers sold to "Bon-Ton Stores"

The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. today announced it has entered into an agreement with Saks Incorporated (owner of Younkers) to purchase its Northern Department Store Group which consists of 142 stores located in twelve states. The acquisition would make Bon-Ton one of the largest regional department store retailers in the United States.

My wife and I have shopped at Bon-Ton while living in Pennsylvania... shoppers won't see much of a change in your shopping experience from the current Younkers.

Boy do I feel old! As a kid, I remember going to downtown York to shop at the one and only Bon-Ton Department Store. It had the only escalator in my town, and my grandmother used to take us to the Tea Room on the mezzanine level. Now it's a major chain!

As was mentioned in another thread, not a killer for Omaha we have plenty of options. Where this will really hurt is Kearney, Hastings, North Platte etc. Cities losing their main or in some cases only department store.

Totally agree. Its also good that they don't have a corporate office here either, so we aren't loosing all those jobs too.

I shop at Younkers quite a lot. I will just end up hitting Macy's more when in KC. They are the closest option to replace Younkers for me.

My wife loves Younkers for their shoes, but I've never had much luck finding much selection in tall man sizes in their GI store and the coupons are never good for anything that I wanted to use them for. Kohls more than fills the bill for me.
