Quad State Trail

Post by Coyote »

I was surfing around this afternoon and came across this project. Any one know about it?
Nebraska Trails Council News wrote:“The Quad State Trail is a continuous trail starting in Marysville, Kansas on the Homestead Trail progressing through Beatrice into Lincoln on the Jamaica Trail and connecting to the MoPac Trail on its way to Omaha. It continues through Omaha on new and exiting trails to the new pedestrian bridge over the Missouri River. Then it connects to the Wabash Trace Trail which runs 72 miles to the Missouri state line.

Next is a connecting trail to St. Joseph, Missouri, then to Kansas City, Missouri, continuing to the western end of the KATY Trail in central Missouri going on to St. Louis. This trail will be approximately 700 miles in length and go through Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas.

“It’s an interesting thing because it connects the north and south routes of the American Discovery Trail from Council Bluffs south to Kansas City. The key to its value is that the small communities or small projects along the route get an opportunity to feel part of a much bigger picture. They are really working to be a part of this,” Greathouse said.

I would love to see Omaha host bicycle tour when the bridge was opened. Visualize the finish line on the pedestrian bridge or just beyond it. It could give the tour de france a run for it's money.

I wouldn't be surprised to see RAGBRAI start in Nebraska at some point in the future.

As for the Quad State Trail... I believe there was some mention of it on the kcskyscrapers.com forum. Thanks for the info Mark!

Bike Trail - $X Thousands per X miles

One beautiful bridge across the Missouri river - $23million

Being able to ride to St. Louis from Omaha on your bicycle - PRICELESS

Omaha needs to market the heck outta this as it is completing. There are plenty of bicycling magazines that would give Omaha the most bang for it's buck.

I still feel that a bike tour/race that could be the U.S. version of the tour de france could blow away the golf open and give the college world series a run for it's money. I would think it could be quite technical trying to pass people on the various trails around Omaha before you head over the bridge to the Wabash and on to the Katy....hmmmmmmm It would really be a different kind of race since the metro trails aren't that wide and they make some interesting turns. This bridge has the potential of creating one of the great cycling events in the country if not the world!! Imagine the possibilities!!

Oh and what about microwave clothing. You could put a potato in your pocket and walla.... :) okay name the movie (although I butchered the line I'm sure)

Finding the money is the next step in building last leg of MoPac East Trail
Lincoln Journal Star wrote:The Lower Platte South Natural Resources District is exploring ways to pay for the final leg of the MoPac East Recreational Trail. But it could be several years before the project is built, district officials say, because there are several issues that still need to be addressed including selecting a final route, financing and acquiring the necessary right-of-way. The 9.3-mile route is basically the same one proposed in 2005 by the Big Muddy Workshop, an Omaha-based consultant hired by the district to explore possible routes. The Lincoln-based NRD has not selected a final route.

Trail groups view the extension as one of the key pieces of a 50-plus mile trail between Lincoln and Omaha. Trail work on the other side of the Platte River has progressed steadily under the sponsorship of the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District. “It’s imperative. It’s very important. It’s the link. How else do you get to the bridge?” said Ross Greathouse, past president of the Nebraska Trails Foundation. Greathouse said he doesn’t understand why the Lower Platte South NRD is still exploring funding options. He said the foundation has $65,000 in the till for the district to use for acquiring additional right-of way for the extension. Greathouse believes that the Omaha side of the trail between the state’s two largest cities will be completed first. “They’re ahead of us. They are doing it. They are going to be done and we’ll still be arguing about where to put it.”

Apparently So. Illinois doesn't count as a separate state, because otherwise that should read the 5 State Trail. Quad must have a better ring :D
