Digital Billboards

Lamar installed 5 new digital billboards at the end of April, in violation of the City code and without permit. The City has begun enforcement proceedings which has prompted Lamar to file suit. The City Council has the first reading today of a code amendment that will make even more clear the fact that such signs are not currently allowed. Lamar is following a pattern of legal challenges they have engaged across the country over the past few years.

Ad much as I don't really care for billboards. The Digital one in Bellevue is freaking amazing in quality.

I will admit that the digital ones draw my attention much more, what with the bright colors and anticipation of what will be next. :lol:

Yes, they are a very welcome distraction while piloting a 3000 lb death sled at 65 MPH. We need more of those.

With that in mind, i would go so far as to say that the traffic signboards that are scattered around the interstate are even more of a hazard. Those are so infrequently used that when there's a message, many times there's more congestion caused from people slowing down to read it than the actual event it's reporting!

Isn't there a bit of irony in the fact that the city is fighting these billboards and yet the item being advertised on the photo capture of them is an event in a city owned facility. :mrgreen:

In a sign of the times, electronic billboards are replacing some of their traditional counterparts in Omaha.

But the city says current rules don't allow the high-tech billboards, and it wants time to develop regulations to govern them.

Officials in the City Planning Department have proposed a temporary ban on electronic billboards while it attempts to come up with new rules.

The proposed ban comes after a national billboard company erected five electronic signs in Omaha in April, against the city's wishes. They are the first electronic billboards in Omaha, although such signs had previously gone up in Sarpy County and Council Bluffs.

Lamar Outdoor Advertising believes electronic billboards are allowed under current city code and converted five of its traditional billboards in Omaha to digital signs. The billboards use LED lights and rotate through a series of advertisements over the course of a minute.

But the city says that its codes never have allowed for electronic billboards and that Lamar violated local laws by erecting them. The company did not take out the necessary permits to convert the billboards, according to the city.

The hubbub and regulation about these signs is ridiculous. I drive by the digital billboard at 60th & Grover every day on the way to work, and the Kia of Omaha (84th & F) digital signage several times a week - the bright, flashing, obnoxious Kia sign is FAR more distracting and a nuisance than ANY digital billboard I've ever seen.

I drive by one every day, as I'm taking my daughter to school. I've gotten to the point where I basically don't notice it anymore.

Of course, it'd be different if I was driving by it at night. But even then, I think I'd come to just ignore it.

Looks like the first digital billboard along I80 has shown up. It is active this week. The billboard is viewed from the east bound I80 side at about 84th street. If you drive this a lot I believe it is the location that has had the Puppy Mill billboard up for the last couple of months or so just to the west if the pet store.

i saw that---it's rather catchy...but didn't at all make me so distracted that i thought i was going to cause a pile up on the interstate (as many nay-sayers had stated)

I agree, but then again I don't have a major problem with Billboards in general. I have seen a lot worse along the roads ie. building that are not kept up, weeds and trees that are out of control, trash everywhere, but that is just me.

Well the new digital billboard along I80 WAS distracting this AM. about 4:15 Am when I went by it was all messed up. The images that were supposed to be on it were cycling, or at least kind of. The whole board looked like an old analog TV with rabbit ears that were trying to pull a distant station in. The image was all "snowy" in the TV scence and flickering in and out. Almost made me want to stop and change the channel!!!!

I saw the one on 72nd and Pacific last night for the first time. Pretty cool, I guess. It at least kept me occupied while I was waiting for the light to change.

The one along I80 must not like cold, damp weather. It was flickering like an old TV again this AM.
