I thought that place was |expletive|. There are a lot of old local places I've tried that I wouldn't feed to starving orphans. Joe Tess is the most overhyped let down of local dining.

I think it might be a generational thing on some of these. What was popular year's ago and still is with folks who dined in those days, doesn't necessarily meet the taste bud or atmosphere needs of our younger friends. Same can probably be said a lot of times in reverse too. Makes for variety I guess.

I am 52 and have eaten at Petrow's several times, and just don't get it. Mediocre food and atmosphere. Boring menu.

I ate at Petrow's for lunch and everyone liked their food and service. It's good to see an old neighborhood place take pride in its property. I didn't know they had an old fashioned soda fountain and want to go back for that.

I agree with the mediocre food point, but I'll also add in that the service has been horrible every time we've gone.

YES. We live a few blocks from Petrow's and can be there within 4-5 minutes walking. We never do it because of the reasons you mentioned. I can put up with below average service if the food is good, but it's NOT.

We eat there for Breakfast from time to time (A lot more if it was open on Sunday). Its right down the street and much closer than our usual Breakfast spots like the 11-worth cafe and Louis M's

They have several good things for Breakfast and the service is good then, but I think most of the Breakfast staff has been there forever.

The last two times I've been to Petrow's for breakfast the service was terrible and the food was ranged from decent to questionable at best. I'm pretty sure it was the first day on the job for the one waitress and the other must have simply forgotten about our table of six. It was apparent that the food both times had been sitting under a heat lamp for extended amounts of time. We were at the restaurant for a solid hour and a half both times. Breakfast at a diner should NEVER take that long.

I used to love going there. Great service. Great food. The last two times I was there: 1) They gave my takeout order to someone else, then argued with me as I watched them make mine up fresh; 2) Insisted the Nebraska Classic (bacon cheeseburger) had always come with caramelized onions -- "It's always been on the menu that way!" I had ordered that for years and it was never on the menu that way (and it still isn't).

It wasn't so much they messed up my orders. It happens. I understand that. It was the fact they argued with me, insisting I was wrong.

It's sad, really. My parents had gone there for decades. So many years and so often, in fact, that when my dad passed away, Nick put "This Butterscotch Malt is for Bob" on their sign.

Not to mention that their menu has changed. They're trying to be "upscale" with pleather bound menus! If they want to go upscale they really should try not to look like a diner.

I've been there a couple times this year. Both meal were great. Once for breakfast on a Saturday and once for lunch. The lunch I had the fish and chips, (it was lent), and the person I was with had a special, prime rib sandwich that he said was really really good.

I just wish they were open on Sundays, we'd go more for breakfast.

The owner of Petrow's, Nick (Pete-Rows) was on What's Cooking this morning, talking about what it meant to be a Diner, especially one that used to cook for AkSarBen race fans back in the day, how he was one if the first to be contacted by Diners, Dive ins, and Dives, but didn't have a distinctive breakfast... But one of the things they are creating is a geo-thermal water unit, heated by the building...

Don't know anything about a closing, hope not.
First the good, ........... Over the years I have been there several times and the food was always good. Not a regular visitor though.

The last time I stopped in was perhaps a year or more ago. I haven't gone back as the last time the waitress had so many face piercings it made going there unappetizing to me. I have seen far worse in the piercing department but it is not what I expect at an Omaha family restaurant. If you are in the food service biz you just should not have things hanging out of your nose if you are serving food.

Sorry just my opinion.

It is conveniently located and looks nice from the outside. They still need to change the Chinese restaurant sign on the lot they acquired to the west.

Saw that the sign was still there last week. Any idea why they kept that? Its not like it was LaCasa or Bronco's neon signs. I don't understand things in this city sometimes. When there are things worth saving, they are torn down. And then there is stuff like this sign that has no reason to still be standing. It looks horrible and has rust on it. Not to mention, the restaurant it is promoting is no longer there.

This was in another post someplace but ..... They want to "Grandfather" the sign. They would not be able to obtain a new permit for the same signage but if they keep the existing pole and frame they can put a new insert into it. I am sure that they will eventually. Sign companies are very expensive and even more so when they make these custom inserts.

Another local family eatery bites the dust..and is closing in less than a week (December 14th)..

I was never a frequent Petrow’s diner. The place is/was okay..But it has a loyal following and I know the family pretty well. Sad to see them close for good...
