Air Pollution Could Cost Metro Area

The Environmental Protection Agency is set to announce a tougher health standard for ground-level ozone later this summer. That means if the region can't reduce its current emissions, there may be serious economic consequences

Figures show the nine-county area surrounding Omaha and Council Bluffs may be in trouble when the federal government implements a fresh standard for ground-level ozone in late August. Depending on where the EPA sets the new level, the impact could be devastating. "Not only do new and expanding businesses have to comply with that lid, also transportation projects have to as well.

Leaders hope if businesses and motorists take action now and think about their choices, the area can avoid strict new regulations. "Whether you want to take the bus, or whether you want to walk to work, whether you want to bike to work," said Paul Mullen of the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency.
