Monday morning several members of the Douglas County Board were on hand to break ground for a new bio-retention garden located one block south of 40th and Pacific, near the Douglas County Health Center in Omaha.
The garden will help contain storm runoff from combined storm and sanitary sewers in that part of town. It will allow that runoff to seep back into the ground to recharge ground water and keep raw sewage and other contaminants from going into creeks and rivers.
The garden is designed to contain at least the first inch of rainfall. That's about 30,000 gallons of water. It will feature native grasses and a few perennials.
