Brad--why do they need to have another engine (behind the first couple cars after the steam engine)? You'd want to think it has the power to pull it; is it just a safety precaution?

Gotta love the radio and OSHA (or would it be FRA) mandated safety goggles and hearing protection on the "conductor." I'm surprised UP didn't make him put reflective tape or something on his suit coat.

I have heard a LOT of different reasons, most common reason is that they use the Dynamic Breaks of the Diesel to help stop the train.

That locomotive is more than powerful enough to pull and stop the train. However its 70 years old now and you just cant run to the parts store to get parts. I am guessing that whatever they use the diesel for, its overall goal is to reduce wear and tear on the Steam Locomotive.

However a different diesel was on the train a couple weeks ago and actually malfunctioned and broke the steam engine. The steam had its breaks locked up and the diesel pushed it creating flat spots on the wheels. They actually had to take the wheels off and ship them to a machine shop. We were literally only 10 days away from missing the Steam locomotive. Those Diesels in Candleshoe's photos, the E9's, were put on as a replacement for the Steam until it was fixed. After it was fixed, they left them on with the Steam which was an awesome treat for all of us that like trains. I have actually seen the steam engine more than I have seen the E9's.

Less than a month and the Steam Locomotive (And hopefully the E9's) will be back in Omaha for the CWS.

The braking is by far and away the biggest reason. A slight secondary reason that makes some sense is that you can likely extend the range a bit between stops if you let the helpers push as well.

Sometimes. The other morning we were in the same area but completely different spots. BG is very creative with his spots. One time the 844 came through he climbed up a tree to get a better shot.
