Just reading in the urban section that the "Shame on" people are now downtown in front of the new hotel. They are all over the city anymore. Any given day you can find a half does on these signs with three temp workers holding it up.

Does this affect the way you think of the business that is being "Shamed on"?

Oh, you mean the same people who were protesting in front of a manufacturing facility in Sarpy county a couple years back, and they turned out to be all illegal, undocumented workers manning the signs? Talk about sh*tting in one hand and eating from the other.

They protest too often, not able to be taken seriously.

I think their picketing is pointless, but it would have more meaning if the workers were actually from a/the union that lost out on the contract. The fact that they have to pay people who have no interest in what they are doing makes it a moot point. I at least hope the unions pay them well.

Saw them at Lexus on 120th and Dodge on my way to class this morning.

So, they're doing the union's dirty work?

Saw them "protesting" in front of the Archdiocese a while back, and in front of many things. It makes me want to use a socially unacceptable finger gesture as I drive by.

When they do it in front of a church, they are done in my book. When they do it in front of a business, I am more inclined to buy stuff there.

I'd say it impacts my impression of the union more than anything, in a negative manner of course.

Myself and other photographers get lowballed by other photogs for local university sports gigs (think contract to shoot a season of XYZ sports at a per-game bid) and it will nearly always go to the lowest bidder who will just dump all their images on a disc, no edits and be done with it. But you certainly don't see us sitting around soccer fields and arenas with SHAME ON XYZ UNIVERSITY signs or tshirts whining because we didn't win the bid. No, we just keep shooting and creating a better quality product for the next opportunity.

Must be trying to maximize exposure with the nice weather.. does anyone know if they have a valid argument or if they are trying to accomplish anything? Seems to be an awful waste of time with their current efforts.

You would never find out by asking them. The union that pays them to occupy sidewalk space forbids them to release info. The people themselves holding the signs don't even have any connection to any union. The only 'labor dispute,' if you can even call it that, is that various businesses selected non-union vs. Union contractors for their construction work. If Iam not mistaken.

You got a point Adam. Guess I do not know enough to argue for it. I dislike the idea of having my paycheck deducted to pay for that stuff. Glad I did not join the union. Are there any pro union people on this board that can give a pro suggestion for the sign holders? I would like to know.

I wonder if these sign douches understand they've descended into the depths of irrelevance right along with the "god hates fags" crew.

On a different note, this being my first post with the new format, and it's seems much better than the previous one. I think the last one may have been one step above instant messaging through DOS. :)

There's been a "Shame on..." group in front of the Landmark Center for weeks (I think, I drive the wrong direction to be able to read what it says). I noticed they were gone this morning. Too windy, maybe?

I would maybe be a little more supportive of these unions if it were out of work people on a strike picket line. When something is so trivial to your union that you can't even scare up an occasional retiree or apprentice to man the signs, it is too trivial for me to support. Just wish they would go a way.

Are they active in other cities? And have they seen any positive result from these half-assed protests to justify paying people to stand there and do absolutely nothing?

I can't see how these banners can accomplish anything more than puzzle bypassers.

I suppose the union can at least use this as example of how they're "defending their members". I wouldn't be surprised if internal PR is a big motivator behind it. If not, the union organizers really need to consider a better outreach team.

that's brilliant. I'm not necessarily anti-union, but there's a big difference between the Wobblies battling job brokers in the Pacific Northwest many years ago and some business hiring non-union labor.

YES!

I feel pretty unsympathetic when the unions feel so strongly that they will protest in front of a church, but not with their own people. Then, the people they hire, don't even get union wages.

Love this sign. We need more people to do this.

Any idea why they're protesting in front of a church? I can't imagine that any union versus non-union anything takes place in a church.
