OPS reports largest enrollment since '70s

The World Herald wrote:
Bolstered by a growing Pre-K enrollment and the largest kindergarten class in decades, the Omaha Public Schools district counted 51,070 students this fall.

It's the largest enrollment for OPS since the 1970s, when numbers nosedived as families increasingly moved to the suburbs.

The 51,000-figure pushes OPS past large, urban school districts like Sacramento, Portland, Oklahoma City, Detroit and Wichita, according to data from the Council of the Great City Schools.

Families also started getting much smaller in the 1970s. Gone are the days when most couples have 3, 4 or more children.

However, immigrant families, which are an ever growing base in OPS, are not following this trend.

From what I see and read, for the most part yes they are. I work in paternity establishment. We see a fair number of Hispanic parents. Most only have one child. The Sudanese are an exception. Having four or more children is not uncommon. But as they assimilate they will soon adopt the practices of almost everyone else here. One or two children being the norm. The cultural reasons for having large families disappear once people move to the US.

That is NOT a good thing.

Yep. It's equally as damaging as a reproductive deficit, like Japan. Japan seems to have taken an evolutionary turn from having sex with people, to having sex with blow up dolls. (I saw a documentary, so I'm an expert)

The 'herbivore men' of japan is an interesting phenomenon.

Same kind of demographic shift is happening in China. WSJ posited that in China, women are reproducing at a rate of 0.7 babies per woman per lifetime. Even in areas or in groups that are not as affected by the 1 child rule, the birth rate is not above 1/woman.

Though, if you think of the US, our baby boom happened during a time of freakishly good economics. Lots of people came back from the war, got good jobs and made bank. There were a lot of people like my grandmother who was in the right place at the right time and went from waitress who studied bookkeeping at night to bank officer (no college degree at all, imagine doing that today?) Lots of people with lots of money AND lots of opportunities made for lots of happy people who got busy making lots of new people.

If you lived in Japan or China right now, would you be hopeful for the future? I am not sure I would.

There's a metric by which any society should attempt to reproduce, I'm sure. To be honest, I think the US is, probably, about where that rate should be.

I hate illegal immigration with a passion, but I don't think we are hitting that number without it. Nor do I think we have an economy built for and increasing population.

this conversation can be limitless.

A rate of 2.1 children isn't bad in a country like ours. Having it too much higher causes major problems in a short time. Besides, we continue to be a nation of immigrants, and will be for at least another 100 years so long as trends continue as they are. The world can't carry an ever growing populace. At some point it needs to slow down. We'll never be like Japan, our culture is extremely different and our country has way more room in general. However, cramming 1 billion people into the United States with the technology we have is by no means a good idea. We're still projected to have 450 Million by 2050, so I think we'll be ok for a good long while.

If you hate illegal immigration, make the system fair and not so classist and it wouldn't be a problem. Make the classical American call to the poor a truth. Not having immigrants is extremely unhealthy for an economy. Just look what happened to Alabama when they tried to remove all of their undocumented workers.

Oh, so Americans are at fault for having millions of illegal immigrants flooding the border? I'm just wondering to what extent I should feel bad about this, or how I should properly reprimand myself.

I think most people understand the benefit of immigration. But I also see a large portion of Americans becoming too stupid to understand the damage unmitigated illegal immigration can cause a sovereign country. I know it feels good to demand understanding and compassion for international poor, and wanting to find them a job and a home here, until reality slaps you upside the head.

I think this is a discussion that will evolve with you, once you have a family.

It costs $10,000 to come to this country legally, per person. That is blatantly unfair and classist and only creates opportunities for the rich to legally immigrate to this country.

And after Alabama tried to get rid of their undocumented workers to free up jobs for people, surprise! No one took those jobs. Fields sat unharvested and tons upon tons of crops were left ruined. If that isn't damaged, what is?

You're damn right it's unfair. You aren't suddenly anointed with the right to immigrate with impunity across the world, however, you are anointed with the right of citizenship in the country which you were born. Something being "unfair" is not inherently negative, however, it is often times a logical outcome of a circumstance.

$165 Immigrant Visa Fee
$1,010 DHS Green Card Application
$675 Citizenship application/test

Hardly $10,000 (unless you are wanting us to pony up the dough for travel expenses, room and board, and basic living expenses until they get on their feet)

What a terrible thought that it might cost a few bucks to gain citizenship in a foreign country. Do you really think the USA wants millions of immigrants who, upon entry, will automatically enroll themselves into federal and state welfare infrastructures?

Also, did you vote for Obama? He launched another strike in class warfare by increasing immigration costs by 10% in 2010.

In one hand you want to argue the fairness of the federal immigration system, and, in the other, you want to argue the logic behind endorsing slave labor rates in the state of Alabama, because without the slave labor, the jobs go unfilled.

Look, this can be a good discussion, but let's not grab the low-hanging fruit, partisan narratives and blindly run with them. That works in Washington, not real life.
