Urban Outfitters Coming To North Down town

A few weeks back I read somewhere on this site a mention of an Urban Outfitters coming to Village Pointe. But there hasn't been any further discussion. Just curious if anyone has some inside scoop on this.

Well, I broke that rumor, but it was never intended to be at Village Pointe. My sourse told me they were looking at a location "not out west". But anyway, that has since fallen through.

I still think Omaha should get one. Downtown, maybe in Upper Market, would obviosly be the best place for it. Maybe in a couple years as that area develops.

Three words..."Will not happen." Has UO ever located in an area with no retail around it? It usually goes to hipster areas or major upscale shopping areas which Omaha has neither.

Yeah, you know... hip places like Lawrence.

Seriously though, we all know when Aaron isn't the greatest pessimist among us... he is our greatest optimist. :)

Who would have guessed a Dave & Buster's would be coming to town and locating next to Big Lots! A Whole Foods in Regency ... the AMC IMAX news. Obviously some entrepreneurs are discovering Omaha. There's no reason to think it can't continue in the Urban Outfitters domain (granted, North Downtown probably is the very least likely location until we're talking 10 years from now).

I have heard from a reliable source that Urban Outfitters will indeed build a store in Omaha. The rumored location is just north of Slowdown.

This could be really big for NDT and DT retail in general. If a "name" place, also something new to the metro, like Urban Outfitters is going to locate in NDT, this could be "the spark over gas" for NDT and DT retail and really kick things off in that department.

Too bad the Apple store went in Village Point. An Urban Outfitters and an Apple Store in NDT would have made the area explode with retail.

I keep having this feeling that the next tidal wave of DT development is fast approaching shore.

I think Apple likes to go into places with already established retail traffic.

Apple has VERY strict guidelines on where they place stores. Not only do they look at the demographics of the surrounding populace, they look at the surrounding retail as well. The stores that surround Apple are much more likely to be those you would find at a Village Point or a One Pacific Place than a high traffic WalMart/Sams Club area in a rich neighborhood. Once you get into bigger cities that have things like Gucci and Armani and Bang & Olufsen (sp?), you'll find the Apple stores nearby.

BTW, Apple is the fastest retailer in history to reach $1B in sales and has higher $sales/sqft than Best Buy. They are really a marvel of modern retailing (especially for a company that was going out of business 10 years ago).

I just looked on the Urban Outfitters website and it had no new stores for Nebraska. The only place that I saw was a new store opening in Baltimore.

Those would be stores that have already been announced. This one has yet to be announced - hence this is in the rumor section. There are sources that have been leaking information about this store before their official announcement. So we will have to wait a few weeks/months before we can move this from the Rumor section to the Urban Development section.

I feel EXACTLY the same way.

I really, REALLY hope this rumor is true. However, if it's not, I think Midtown Crossing would be PERFECT for an Urban Outfitters.

Also, since Slowdown (and Film Streams) is really going to be the first NEW DEVELOPMENT in "North Downtown" which is going to be a phenomenal draw for the area (especially if UO is landed), I propose calling the district currently known as "North Downtown" or the slighly ridiculous "North Downtown".... THE SLOWDOWN!!!!

I think it makes for a fantastic title, and would grow to have a fond irony to it, as the area becomes more young, hip, and FAST PACED.

Wow, five years ago this was a dumpy brownfield with boarded up buildings and very little traffic. Now it's becoming trendy enough to attract an Urban Outfitters.

I think Slowdown (as in The District Formally Known as North Downtown... :;): ), Midtown Crossing, or Aksarben Village would all be PHENOMENAL and appropriate locations for Urban Outfitters, in that order.

Slowdown: It's an emerging urban district in need of retail and residences, both of which a destination store like UO would attract in SPADES. Also, Proximity to the new Slowdown venue and Film Streams, Creighton University, and all that downtown has to offer.

Midtown Crossing: It's such a high caliber development with SOLID financial backing. Close to hip neighborhoods with lots of younger college aged kids, and conveniently between Downtown/Creighton and UNO.

Aksarben Village: With the "college" atmosphere sought by the Aksarben Village developers, this would be a fantastic tenant, and obviously, very close to UNO and more centrally located in Greater Omaha.

I'd definitely vote for Slowdown or Midtown, but wherever they may go, the importance lies in the grand scheme of Omaha FINALLY getting this LONG-DESERVED retailer.

I'm really anxious to hear more on this rumor. Those of you who have indicated that you have inside information, is there anything more you can say about this rumor? When we can expect to hear any official news, status of "negotiations," etc.

If you can't say on this board, a PM would be GREATLY appreciated.

Slowdown does sound a heck of a lot better than North Downtown! This may happen naturally if the slowdown project becomes the anchor and catalyst for real DT retail development.

They are going in the ground floor of the North Building. Construction plans were changed to accommodate a few of Urban Outfitters space requirements.

I think by "north building" he means the Slowdown building, as opposed to Film Streams.

Thanks for that info, Guest. If that's true, it will REALLY be a phenomenal development for Downtown, Slowdown (the district), and the entire metro region. I hope you and your sources are credible!!!

Do you know when we can expect an announcement?

Indie label lures national retailer downtown

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=1 ... id=2364758
Urban Outfitters will open a store this fall in the Saddle Creek Records complex at 14th and Cuming Streets, marking the first time in two decades that a major national clothing retailer will operate in Omaha's downtown area.

The Philadelphia-based company - known for selling hip clothes, shoes, accessories, gifts and home décor in college towns and major cities - will occupy an 8,500-square-foot, two-story space between the locally owned Blue Line Coffee and an unleased restaurant space in the independent record label's north building.

Landing an established national retailer in the developing area is a major coup for both Saddle Creek Records and the city, label executives and the mayor's office said.

Awesome. The best part is how the said other retailers are considering moving to the area. Having a big name place like Urban Outfitters will be a big magnet for people and other retailers to come DT.

I think it's time for the city to recognize the potential for a property/sales tax bonanza emerging in North Downtown... and start converting Qwest Center surface parking to multi-level parking (with ground floor tenant spaces please!)... and this should be yet another kickstart for the streetcar line and baseball park.

This is great news! North Downtown is about to boom.

I agree wholeheartedly Jeff. I have a plan I showed Mark and Lou (Coyote and O Cowboy) that I'm going to post soon. It's a big project involving one of the Qwest Center lots and does feature a parking ramp wrapped in retail and apartments. I really like the plan and think it would work quite well, now I just need a few million to get started. :( I'll post the plan up tonight. Anyways, back to the Urban Outfitters.
