Not only is the Cinco de Mayo celebration at the Shops of Legacy (168th & West Center Road) giving away a BMW Z4 convertible, but they also have LIVE music - something South O's celebration had to bail on when a booked band bailed.

I didn't bother checking for when things were happening - assuming they'd actually be happening on the 5th - silly me! So a friend and I trolled around 24th, learned the big party was the 6th, and ended up driving to the Old Market and eating at The Michaels last night. Dowtown was busier than usual and overrun with business casual peeps. I guessing due to the Berkshire events.

I didn't know the convention was this weekend until I saw something about it today (Saturday) in past Thursday's OWH. I noticed that is was a little bit busier than usual too.

I'm sorry but I have to say the Cinco de Mayo Parade was very disappointing. I saw more people there for election campaigns than actual mexicans dressed in costumes and dancing/singing. Sorry, but I travel so much, so I expected a little bit more with a strong Mexican population in South Omaha.

Looking forward to a Heritage Festival in Providence, RI this year, where my friend's daughter will perform some Bolivian dances.

Tuesday, April 29: A kickoff luncheon featuring keynote speaker Maria Hinojosa will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the ITC Conference Center on Metropolitan Community College’s South Omaha Campus. Hinojosa is anchor and executive producer of “Latino USA” on National Public Radio. An award-winning journalist, she has also appeared on PBS, CBS and CNN. The event is open to the public; call 402-457-5231 for reservations. General admission is $15 and admission for Metropolitan Community College students is $10.

Thursday, May 1: The Latino Fiesta of Comedy and Culture will offer an evening of comedy with comedian Mike Robles from Loco Comedy Jam at Guaca Maya Mexican restaurant at 8:00 p.m., with proceeds to benefit the Heartland Latino Leadership Scholarship Fund.

Friday, May 2: The first-ever Spice of South O offers authentic Mexican food, fun and fiesta at 24th and N Streets beginning at 5:30 p.m. and celebrates the 20-year anniversary of The Reader. The carnival will also begin at 5:30 p.m. along South 24th Street from O through M Streets, with rides and midway operating until 10 p.m. (present a Supermercado or No Frills receipt to get $3 off an all-day ride pass). Shamrock Limousine will offer free shuttle service from the South High parking lot at 23rd and J Streets to the event site.

Renowned Mexican artist Diana Reyes will perform at the Plaza de la Raza main stage (25th and N Streets) beginning at 6:30 p.m.; admission is free. The Cinco de Mayo Queen Coronation will also take place Friday evening at 6 p.m. with Reyes crowning the new Queen.

Saturday, May 3: The Midwest’s largest parade will begin at 10 a.m., extending from 24th and D Streets to 24th and L Streets. A fiesta will follow the parade, along with food booths, live music and a variety of vendors and exhibitors. More than 80 shops and restaurants offering a wide variety of Mexican cuisines will be open for business during the festivities. The carnival will resume at noon and will run through 10:30 p.m. along with food and vendor booths.

Sunday, May 4: Sunday events begin with a 10 a.m. Mariachi Mass and Christian Service on Plaza de la Raza (25th and N Streets), followed by a Health Fair from noon to 3 p.m. The carnival, food and vendor booths and live entertainment festivities continue from noon until 10 p.m. Sunday’s headlining music performer, to be announced, will take the Plaza de la Raza stage for a free performance beginning at 4 p.m.

The second annual Cinco de Mayo Golf Tournament begins at 8 a.m. at Eagle Hills Golf Course, 501 Eagle Hills Drive in Papillion. Spots are limited.
