KETV reported that there was $97,000 in damage. Chump change.
The World-Herald reported it to be closer to $1 million. If that’s true I would not expect them to reopen before Spring 2019.

While there are hotter corners in town, I could see some developer wanting to put another medical building there. Would not surprise me if The Drover moves on or the family decides to retire.

They are now saying Late April on Omaha.com. That would put it at 4 months.

Two days before the Drover caught on fire on the Thursday before Christmas a couple of friends and I had decided we were going to eat lunch at either the Drover or Wheatfields. I might be one of the few people in Omaha who had never ate at either one of these places. We decided to go with Wheatfields and go to the Drover in January. Wheatfields was great no doubt about it :thumb: As for the Drover maybe I will get there some day maybe I won't.

The Drover certainly has a loyal following. I just don’t get it.
I’m wondering how they can do an extensive remodel and not have handicap accessible restrooms. Aren’t they in the basement?

Going on 4 months for $80K in renovations is highly suspect. I've seen them build new buildings in that amount of time. They might be seizing the opportunity to give themselves a complete makeover, but some communication would be nice. According to their website, they're still open for business and please call to make a reservation. Meanwhile, their FB page hasn't been updated since January 10th. Their number has been disconnected, but that could simply be because people keep calling to see if they're open.

It is customary that a business/homeowner to be advised to suspend all services while the premise is unihabitable/usable. Services like phone, cable, OPPD & MUD. Perhaps that's the case here

Having worked with a few various, uh, unplanned remodels over the years, it's pretty much standard practice to have business telephones covered, even if only via an answering bureau. If it's a disconnect with no coverage/forwarding/referral, it's not a good omen for a reopening.

That, plus how expensive can it be to maintain and update your restaurant’s web site with progress notes on the reopening? Unless you don’t care about keeping your customers interested in coming back, or you no longer need customers because you are permanently out of business.

I hope this does reopen. I’ve never been and I hope I didn’t miss the boat. I have been to all the other Omaha classic steakhouses and always said next time we’ll go there. Sure hope there is an extra time for the Drover.

M's Pub took just short of 2 years to re-open after their fire. Same problems too, not up to code, bathrooms in the basement, etc. Also, find an architect right now that's not swamped, then find a contractor that's not swamped... Good luck opening any time soon. I like the Drover and can't wait to go back, but I'm not going to be shocked if they announce a 2020 reopening date.

The front page of the Living Section of today's paper touted a list of 38 of the best restaurants in town. I started to read the article and the first restaurant was Stella's in Bellevue. They can not be serious! Then I saw the Drover was on the list. Who makes a list like this and puts a place on there that has been closed for 4 months and will not be open for another 2 or more months? Last on the list was Runza. That article was worthless why have I not dropped the paper yet. :what:

I agree with your comments, and shared my thoughts in an email to the author. She responded that the Drover made the list because so many readers had emailed her to say it belonged on the list, even if it was still closed. I also disagreed with Tired Texan, Blue & Fly and a couple of others. But on the whole I thought that her list was a very good one.

I would have included Pizza King, Louie M’s Burger Lust, 801 Chophouse and probably China Garden on the list.

For the record, it isn’t a listing of the 38 “best” restaurants in town, but rather 38 that make Omaha’s restaurant scene unique, with places for every mood and price points. Obviously the author likes them all.

PK, Louie M's are both iconic metro places to eat. PK has some of the best pizza in the metro. It is also close to Christy Creme which is where all the cognizenti in the know go for ice cream sandwiches. Louie M's makes killer burgers and the best bagel and lox in Omaha.

Blue and Fly is good, but service sucks and the menu has real Chinese food, but often it is not clear what is real and what is westernized. Often it takes a long time to get food and the parts of the meal come out at the wrong time. The last time I was there, my desert order for the table came out before my meal did so everyone is eating their entrees while the desert is getting too cold to enjoy and my food never arrived. With New Gold Mountain near by at the Ak Village, I have no reason to go back. Just overall better food, service, and management at either Gold Mountain location.

We went to Gold Mountain once and had a terrible experience. Not sure if it was an anomaly, but we stick to Three Happiness and Rice Bowl now for our Chinese food.

I've had it a number of times. I've done pickup every time and the service has been pleasant each time. I'm not 100% sure, but I think I remember it being a bit more expensive than your average westernized Chinese place. I'd say I've eaten their food about six different times and got something different each time. They have a lot of variety so I'm still searching for my go to order. The quality has been good so far, but generally everything seems to be "lighter" than what I'm used to (Jade Palace in Bellevue, Golden palace, Three Happiness, Rice Bowl). Sauces are not as thick in texture, less salty (or MSG-y), less greasy. But they seem to use of a greater variety of ingredients.

You should try their lettuce wraps, that is the one awesome thing I've gotten there so far. I'm sure there are other things that are awesome there, and its not too far away, which is why I keep trying something new each time I go there.
