Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts is not a fan of an author whose book was chosen for this year's "One Book, One Nebraska" honor.
Gov. Ricketts said he will not sign a proclamation honoring Ted Genoways, author of "This Blessed Earth."
"This author has been a political activist, been very critical of our national leaders and so forth and really not saying things that bring Nebraskans together but really trying to be somebody who is trying to be more divisive," said Ricketts.
In a tweet, Genoways wrote, "Withholding or rescinding ceremonial honors is petty and shows a narrowness of spirit and of mind."
"This Blessed Earth" follows a Nebraska farm family struggling to stay afloat in the midst of shifting trade policies and climate change.

Picking the book written by a political activist who has crapped on the governor’s political party demonstrates that the group that picked the book is either clueless or looking for a fight. Stating his position in public is stupid on the Governor’s part. He could have simply deep sixes it and avoided the black eye.

The author will probably sell more books now, with the added attention. Thanks Ricketts!

Since 2005, the Nebraska Center for the Book has had its annual “One Book One Nebraska” selection recognized by the governor.
Not this year. The book selected was “This Blessed Earth: A Year in the Life of an American Family Farm,” which follows the life of Rick Hammond, a York County farmer.
The Nebraska Center for the Book, an affiliate of the Library of Congress, made its selection in October. Each year, it chooses a book with a tie to Nebraska.
“It’s an award-winning book,” said Rod Wagner, director of the Nebraska Library Commission. “It’s received national attention. Of course there are ideas in the book that people will not agree to, but I think that’s also a reason why it makes for a good one to consider and discuss.
This says it all--- Ricketts said he has not read Genoways’ book. He said “One Book” organizers can pick any author they want, but “I also decide who I’m going to do proclamations for.”Ricketts said he has not read Genoways’ book. Ah yes, how stupid of the organization to pick a book by an author that doesn’t agree with Ricketts politically.bigredmed1 wrote: Tue Jan 08, 2019 10:21 am Picking the book written by a political activist who has crapped on the governor’s political party demonstrates that the group that picked the book is either clueless or looking for a fight. This is pretty awesome actually, it shows how petulant Ricketts and most of the GOP is.

Between comments like this by Ricketts which resonate well with the conservative base, and the mad rush to execute someone last year, I think that he's going to go after Sasse's Senate seat in 2020.

It's like the governor never heard of the Streisand effect. I didn't even know this program existed, now I do. I'm sure I'm not alone in this.
