Latest Census Estimates Confirm Growth

Update your signature lines, Omaha's population continues to climb. The latest census estimates reported in the local paper today show the Big O's population at 404,267.

Momentum continues to build.

Gotta go. Running to the census bureau website to see if Omaha has continued to rank above Tulsa and check our relative ranking to other cities.

Yeah, I saw that in the paper this morning. Great news!

Although, I kinda expected the city population to jump past 400,000 when it was at 399,000 in 2000 (or whenever the last estimate was).

Is this update only pertaining to cities and towns, or are there new county estimates that we can form another CMSA estimate from?

Just muncipalities. The county estimates for 2003 have already been released.

That's how we came up with those 793,172 MSA, 829,133 CSA numbers Aaron.

Well it's official now. We have over 400,000 people. I met some one last week who still thought Omaha had 300,000. This will probably start to help Omahans to cast aside that "small town" image and think like a big city. I think the rest of the people in Nebraska will |expletive| themselves when they see that number.

Actually, most "average joes and janes" (unlike us) don't have a clue when it comes to city population and metro population.

For shits and giggles I used to ask my friends in high school what they thought Omaha's population was.....and I got the most ridiculous answers. Some were way too high, some were way to low. One girl said 50,000, another guy guessed 2 million. Then, for comparison, I'd ask how big they thought New York City is, and they were even more bogus...answers like 500,000.

So, for most people, this isn't a milestone. Omaha is still just Omaha to them.

I asked people alot how big Omaha was and I usually got 300k. I once asked a guy from Lincoln how big Likncoln was and he said 125k when it is 235k. Most people are ignorrant about how big their city is. But whenever I talk to people from other places they seem to know how big where they live is.

Well I have to confess that I have been aware that I am not like most people I know. I have been a population (and other statistics) junkie all of my life. (How did I end up this way?) As a result this surpassing 400,000 thing is indeed a big thing to me. I have been watching the census figures since 1960 waiting for this to happen.

Also, since the 2000 census, Tulsa has continued to drop. Again in this latest estimate. We are now ahead of Oakland as well. So this continued climb in pop should not be taken for granted in my opinion. There are many examples of central cities losing population. And here we are still gaining. And during the Fahey years of much more conservative annexation.

I hope I live long enough to see 500,000. I think it may be quicker from 400 to 500K than it was from 300 to 400K. I hope so because unlike some of you on the forum, I don't likely have another 40 years in my lifespan. While were on it, I hope I live long enough to see another Woodmen or taller scraper downtown.

Does anyone have a link to the official city rankings with the new Census stats. I know that Omaha passed a few cities but I am interested in who is ahead of us and by how much.

If we get Douglas County than we will have over 500,000 by 2010 according to the Omaha Chambers population projections. I know to us number junkies this is a big deal. I hope we do get another Woodmen sized building in the next 5 years. I don't know the likelyhood of that but c'mon Ameritrade? Mutual of Omaha? Somebody.

I usually just mess around with the term "census" directly on my browser or at Google and end up at the census site. If memory serves me correctly the address is census.org. or maybe it is uscensus.org or us.census.org.

I know it's not realistic at this time, but Commerical Federal has over twice the assets of First National according to the W-H last week...and FN has a tower...

Wouldn't it be nice to see CF build a downtown skyscraper?
