The winning bid Friday was $2,626,311 for an eight-person lunch with Buffett, breaking the record set in 2008. The bidder asked to remain anonymous, in contrast to recent years when the winners discussed their donations openly. The previous record was $2.1 million, by Hong Kong investment fund manager Zhao Danyang in 2008. He brought family members and friends to the New York restaurant for a three-hour meal with Buffett. That bid also was a record for a charity auction on eBay, the online auction website.

Buffett lunch surpasses last year's $2.6M bid

An anonymous bidder agreed Friday to pay more than $2.6 million for a lunch with billionaire investor Warren Buffett, offering a final amount after the auction closed that topped last year's bid that set a record for the most expensive charity item ever sold on eBay. All proceeds go to the Glide Foundation, which provides social services to the poor and homeless in San Francisco.
