No I do not harbor much hope that Nebraska will break out this year. Even though the coach of Creighton had a melt down and the team blew up and he has to start almost totally over from scratch I bet Creighton still beats Nebraska!

Yeah that talent coming in seems to be best ever. Though I think some of the Danny Nee classes were up there, recruiting rankings weren't as developed back then.;

Nebraska and Creighton play in Lincoln November 16. Each team will be the other's opponent for the Gavitt Games between the Big 10 and Big East. First time they have done that.

Not excited about that. It would be nice for them each to have a separate opponent for the Gavitt Games.

Agreed. Major bummer that they tied in the normal in-state game with the Gavitt. That said, I guess it opens up a schedule date for both teams.

The alliance today announced between the Big 10, PAC 12 and ACC now only included a scheduling alliance for football, but men's and women's basketball as well. Very cool.

Football is getting the ink, but basketball is who needs the surgery. March Madness takes 1 SEC, 1 B1G, 1 Big12 team, but then takes the champions of these obscure micro conferences that have bball and little else. Seems unfair to pour these teams into the playoffs when even avg teams in the bigger leagues are better than league champs.

Would love to have some limit as to just how small a conf can be and still get a seat at the table in March.

Good point. I know most think all the Power 5 stuff is football only but it definitely could involve/impact some or all of the other sports.

Sorry man, but I totally disagree. If there's one thing in college athletics that's not broken, it's March Madness. The charm of it is seeing the smaller conference schools take on the big boys. Teams from the SEC, B1G, Big XII etc. have a much better opportunity to get in than the teams from the smaller conferences via an at large berth. Smaller conf. teams don't have the same opportunities due to the few games they are able to schedule against Top 75 / Top 50 teams (most of which are major conference teams).

Charming as it may be, the players matter. The deal they get is win it all or watch on TV. If you only have 5 other schools to beat and 3 of them are glorified high school teams, you have an intrinsically better chance of getting into March Madness than a guy who has 3 teams in his conference that could beat lower tier NBA teams, and he has to beat them all to make it. If the teams were more reliably ranked and the selection committee would pull teams into the finals based on strength of schedule, I would be less bugged about this. Frankly I am just tired of the annual gaggle of no-name conferences getting leg ups over teams that are better than they are getting passed over.

It will be interesting to see how all the Power 5 shake ups end up impacting other sports. If I am the AD or President of a school not in one of those conferences I am somewhat concerned or at the very least, closely monitoring these developments. If they separate from the NCAA could have a huge and detrimental impact to things like the the men's b-ball tourney.

Since there are 68 spots available in the tournament I don't mind the auto bids. What I have never understood is why the playing in games are always the lowest seeded teams playing to be the 16 seed? Then 2 of the 4 get the experience of winning an NCAA tournament game. Not sure why higher seeded teams have to play the playin game.

Thinking through the funnel of 1m High School players to 5k D1 5o 500 NBA players plus additional years of physical development feels like it should make it pretty straightforward.

When I was a kid growing up in central Kansas, I'd go to the Y in the summer to shoot hoops with my friends, and the lunch-time crowd, including some mid-20s guys who had played D2 ball would come in to play, and one time there was this woman, probably around 25, who came in and said, "Hey, let me play today" and they said, "Not you, no way." She pestered them for a couple minutes, finally they said, "Ok, fine, but your team only gets 4." She still totally destroyed them. Like, 21-6, 21-8, something like that. The only game that was close was when they let two of my middle-school age friends play. Shanele Stires, WNBA journeywoman.

'18 Villanova might be able take a game from a lottery team from last year they matched up to right, but I don't think they'd take more than one in a best of seven.

My opinion is that there is no way the top college teams could play the worst NBA teams and not get blown off the court by 20 or 30 points consistently. College Basketball is majorly watered down these days due to the fact that players go to the NBA the second they can to get some money in their pockets.

I’ve read this response like five times and I’m still so confused by what you’re saying. Do you think that bigger conferences only get one automatic bid into the tournament, and no at-large bids? Also, the worst NBA team would trounce the best college team.

The small conferences each get in. The big conferences still just get one in. So a handful of teams get in beyond the champions, it doesn’t change the fact that the small conferences are often not that competitive and the one team that is champ is not one that could survive in the post season tournament in the majors.

I honestly don’t think that the bottom tier of the NBA could beat a top tier college team, especially if they had to play with NCAA rules and refs.

More than a handful of other teams get in, the majority of the tournament is power six at large teams. I feel like you don’t actually watch NCAA basketball and are just complaining.

The key going forward is do the big schools go their own way and not include the smaller ones at all? The next few years are going to be very interesting on how college athletics look and perform for years to come. The movement in conferences and NIL I think are just the beginning.

I miss what we had in the 90's. That being said, I am glad for right now, Nebraska is in the Big 10.

Friday on Gary Sharp’s show after he gave an update on the UNO vs UNL volleyball match, Gary mentioned Trev Alberts. He mentioned that Trev had recently approached Fred Hoiberg about the 2 schools playing in men’s basketball. Said Hoiberg agreed and was open to starting a series with UNO. Gary said to expect a series to begin next year or the following one. Made it seem like it’s a done deal.
