Overall I agree with you.

I think UNO has been a difficult job. I don't think they've always had a big budget. Plus most of their nonconference games are on the road having to play Power 5 schools for the appearance fee (or whatever you call it). Hansen moved up from D2 with the program. I think he has been around as long as he has because he's a good guy, every now and then had a little success , the AD recognized the difficulty of the job, and possibly not enough funds to upgrade.

With the new AD coming from Creighton, I think he wants to invest more in basketball. UNO basketball really should be drawing better than they have since moving to Baxter. Nice arena, fantastic location. Obviously winning will be a key. They also need to market it better and run some specials. I am surprised how little they have leveraged their hockey season ticket holders (I am one) for basketball. Rarely have I ever got much of anything about basketball ticket or concession specials. Doing this would add value to the hockey tickets and help with basketball interest.

I know when Adrian Dowell was hired, fundraising was one of his strong suits. Hopefully this is a sign of that.

Those of us who have followed the program over the years can echo what Gary Sharp said yesterday. You simply cannot compete in this league with one arm and one leg tied behind your back.

You can't have assistant coaches making a fraction of what assistants at your peer schools make.

You can't be one of the only schools not offering full cost of attendance scholarships.

You can't have a fraction of the non-assistant staff that other schools have including video, etc.

Schools like South Dakota St., North Dakota St, etc. have chosen to treat basketball as a priority. If the new AD comes in and gives a new head coach all of the things Hansen was not provided, I'm going to have somewhat of a problem with that. But, end of the day, I want the program to succeed and not feel like they are the local kids rec league team trying to compete against the travel select squad down the road.

UNO basketball's fortunes have largely hinged in the D-1 era on just what kind of talent they could pull (and keep) from the Metro Conference. In the good years, it was Hollins and Thurman. A couple years before that it was Erickson and CJ Carter. The last few years was Hahn. There just was a gap where there wasn't much of that kind of talent. It doesn't make Hansen a better or worse coach in the interim. It just means he can't go out of state and entice kids to come play here for a worse deal than other schools are offering that will give them full cost of attendance.

That's where I referred to the new AD raising money. UNO has to make a commitment to be good. They also as I said need to do much better marketing the program and figuring out at what price point they can get more fans. There is so much more UNO could be doing with their athletic department, including with their basketball team. As a hockey season ticket holder, honestly they are for the most part the most inept at times, group I deal with. I know they've lost season ticket holders over the years because of this.

You are right about not engaging the hockey community. I've said that for years. When I was a hockey season ticket holder, I basically never got offers for other sports like basketball, volleyball, or soccer. There has never been any synergy between the sports and hockey has always been treated like a separate entity that exists above and beyond the greater athletic department, even since they've gone D-1. It's maddening.

The price point to get more fans is going to be contingent on winning. When they were finishing 2nd-4th in the league and making runs in Sioux Falls, there would be a loud, passionate couple thousand fans in the stands. This year, they were doing $3 Saturday GA tickets. Normally, they are $5 anyway. That's a great value, but you can't get people in, at any price, to watch a 5 win team. They will have to to commit to being competitive, as you stated.

And, I agree with you on the ineptitude at times. I'm frustrated right now with how they are handling baseball. I get that they built a nice new ballpark...and there are costs associated with that. However, I went to the opener on Friday and was absolutely shocked to see that the lowest priced "get me in the door" ticket was $15. FIFTEEN DOLLARS. FOR UNO VS. VALPARAISO. Basketball is $5 and hockey has $10 tickets. Baseball even has $10 GA on their price list, but multiple people at the window were informed that they will only sell you a $10 GA ticket if all other reserved seats are already sold. That is mind blowing. For the first time in my life, I was compelled to write a complaint to the athletic department. So far, I've received no reply. I pointed out their own pricing for other sports. I pointed out Storm Chasers tickets start at $9. I pointed out that Husker tickets start at $7 and have childrens pricing. The guy in front of me was told there was no childrens pricing and his kids would cost $15 even though they were about 5 and 7. That was $45 for a family of 3 to watch UNO vs. Valpo baseball. Insane. I stated that I want to support the team, but I simply can't justify it at these prices. You want to charge that for games against Creighton and Nebraska? fine. But, you're not going to get people to pay that against Valpo or North Dakota St.

It's just maddening at times. You can't run a D-1 program with a NAIA mentality.
