AIM Institute gifted Silicon Prairie News to the Nebraska Journalism Trust, the organization behind Flatwater Free Press. They're siphoning SPN to one reporter, and not have the same coverage or format of SPN and focus on business related news solely in Nebraska.

The Nebraska Journalism Trust has acquired Silicon Prairie News, the premier site for startups and tech news in the region.

The AIM Institute, which has stewarded the outlet for years, has gifted the name, the archive, the social media accounts and all the rest. Their only ask is that we continue to carry the torch for the news source and its audience.

We are honored to make that happen, and grateful for their work to keep it alive.

I wanted to take some time to tell you how we intend to live up to our end of the bargain.

Our vision is for a reporter to continue AIM’s work. This person — a full employee of the Nebraska Journalism Trust — will doggedly report on developments within our tech and startup ecosystem. The job is posted here. They will be well-sourced. They will be curious. They will pursue leads and ask hard questions.

In other words, they’re going to do journalism.

Flatwater allows any newspaper to print their stories for free as long as they are properly credited. The World-Herald has used quite a few; I believe USA Today even used one a year or so ago.

Nebraska Supreme Court hears governor’s appeal on nonprofit news organization records request



The right of citizens to get reasonable access to public records went before the Nebraska Supreme Court on Thursday. Flatwater Free Press — an independent, nonprofit news organization headquartered in Omaha’s Old Market — raised questions last year regarding Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen’s family business: hog farming.

Over the past few years, reporter Yanqi Xu has investigated the impact of high nitrate levels in drinking water and its potential link to childhood cancer. She ultimately uncovered 16 of Pillen’s hog farms that had high nitrate levels, and published the findings in the Flatwater Free Press in October. In an interview on KFAB radio after the story was published, Gov. Pillen said that he’s not interested in reading what she found.
