Anyone heard anything about a massive Cyber Attack that has taken out CHI's and its parent company's computers? Apparently they have been down for over a week and they have no idea when everything is restored. CHI Can't access any of your personal data including your medical history. They are still open but it sounds like you should go elsewhere if you have a true emergency.

Certain cyber incidents can leave systems down for weeks, says expert

CHI Health shut down some IT systems as a precaution after its parent company Common-Spirit reported that security issue. Common-Spirit owns 140 hospitals in 21 states, including Iowa and Nebraska. Advertisement
It also has more than 1,000 care sites. Gary Sparks, the director of the cybersecurity center program at Metropolitan Community College says certain cyber incidents can leave systems down for days, even weeks. "Of course, they'll probably have a forensics team look at how they got in, what did they do, how did they do it and what do they need to do to prevent this in the future," Sparks said.

According to Sparks, recent trends in cyber situations are typically caused by someone within a system being compromised. When that occurs, each message coming from that system looks legitimate and can leave people vulnerable to certain situations. "You look at the address, if it's anything out of the ordinary it's good to error on the side of caution," Sparks said. "Give them a call and say 'hey we just got this, is this legitimate?'" Situations similar to this aren't uncommon to leave systems out of service, according to Sparks. When cyber situations take place, the system needs to go offline to make sure the system isn't left more vulnerable.

Yeah - this is frustrating. My daughter suffered a medical event out of town and have been trying to get an appointment scheduled with her specialist but cannot get anything scheduled because of this. And trying to get them to call me back is a joke. They promised to call me back twice (by end of day each day), but never did.

Interesting that UNMC has a Cyber Attack and its all over the local news. CHI has a Cyber Attack and KMTV, WOWT, OWH, and the Nebraska Examiner don't cover it even though reputable national news outlets are covering it.

UNMC is the big dog. But it is still the young dog. Between my childhood and today, in 60 years, it went from a charity hospital that no one would go to unless they really had to, and even worse before I was born to what it is today.

CHI is a bigger corp, and it has Creighton ties and that gets it into the Catholic Mafia protection and Bergan has always had better PR control.

Basically, UNMC was a ghetto general until the 70's and till the 80's was a hobby/tax write off for the docs at Clarkson. They would see welfare pts at UNMC and paying pts at Clarkson. The pathology dept at UNMC had 1 full time faculty and this was the micro lab director for both.

Trauma and bone marrow transplant got UNMC off the ground and they built up solid organ transplant fast.

For a while through the 80's, UNMC had a busier children's service than Children's. They were one of the 5 biggest pediatric heart surgery centers till the late 80's.

Between these, UNMC built up the rep it has now, but this rep is only 20-30 years old.
