'This is my world': Carter Lake Library first Black director transforms library

From the floor to the ceiling, everything is new at Carter Lake Library. "Everything, except for the shelving, which I'm hoping to get that change within the next one to two years," library director Shannon Putney said. Putney is behind a lot of the design and she's only been in the position for 10 months. "This is an experience that most librarians don't get. In the sense that I got to rebuild this library literally from the ground up," Putney said.

With a new library and a new position, she said, this job makes her the only Black library director in the metro. She said that fact took her by surprise. "I didn't even realize it at first," Putney said. "Then I started thinking about it and talking to people and they were like, 'You're the only African American director in the area in the entire Omaha metro area.' I thought, 'Wow, that's a daunting task,' right? Because now you're like, 'I can't mess this up.'" She hopes to encourage more people of color into the field.

Carter Lake Elementary school used for an active shooter drill on Wednesday

Carter Lake, IA (KPTM) — Carter Lake Elemantary school and city officials conducted an active shooter drill on Wednesday afternoon. Carter Lake Fire, Police and Emergency management along with Council Bluffs community school districts and volunteers participated in the drill. The school is currently on spring break, so there we no students in the school, but many students and teachers volunteered to help with the training drill. It took organizers roughly six months to be able to get to do the drill. but they know its something that needs to be practiced. “This isn’t something we have ever done before. We have our own drill and plans but to see it come to fruition, see everyone work together is beneficial for all,” said Tim Hamilton, chief of student family services for the Council Bluffs School District.

I noticed there is a new 54 unit 55+ apartment building going up on the NW Corner of Avenue K and N 9th Street called Residence at Carter Lake and looks to be about topped out.

While researching to see what the new apartment building was in Carter Lake I came across plans for a new Resort that was in the early planning stages. It looks like they had meetings about it last year but I couldnt find any updates on it. Does anyone know if this is still in the works?
