Runners, first responders tackle another year of 'Trek Up the Tower'

Nearly 700 people walked through the doors of First National Bank Tower in downtown Omaha Saturday morning to participate in this year's "Trek Up the Tower." "It's an exciting way to welcome people to the tower in a unique way," Sally Christensen with FNBO said. The event has been virtual the past two years but returned in 2023 in grand fashion. Members of Omaha & Bellevue Fire and Omaha Police started the day off with one goal in mind: finish the challenge. Participants are tasked with climbing 40 flights of stairs - 870 steps - or they can take on the "vertical mile" challenge - climb 40 flights 10 times.

Ben Smail attempted the vertical mile Saturday and was three legs down when KETV talked to him. "I train pretty seriously for this," Smail said. "I look forward to this event starting in October and I train pretty seriously looking forward to these 4 hours."
