'Out of whack': Local homeowner on residential property valuations



Pat Schneider is a homeowner who says property valuations for single-family homes need to be re-examined. "The problem that I've seen over the years is they're just arbitrarily assigning values to things," Schneider said. He said he's lived at his current residence since 1993. and that aside from painting it and replacing the roof, he’s made no real additions to the property. However, he said his property’s assessed value went up by $60,000 this last year. He feels the valuations are based off what’s in the area rather than the individual properties themselves.

In an industry summed up by "location, location, location" it's so weird that your property value can be impacted by what's around the property's....location.

I live in a Hearthstone area. Exact homes as mine can be +/- $10,000 in valuation. The current system is not fair. Diane Battiatio ran on fixing this. She failed.

Every property tax regime has an accepted error bar, it's inevitable. $10,000 is not much when it comes to property.

Almost every property, in Douglas County at least, is significantly undervalued compared to what it would actually bring in a sale.
