Skate advocates open art exhibit to help influence city skate park



A South Omaha skate park is back in the public eye as an art exhibit opens to help skaters give input on Lynch Park. Lynch Park has been a hot topic between skaters and the city for years. But a commitment of $3 million hopes to shape an expanded park space. The South Omaha skate community said the park is a place of unity.

It's something they built from the ground up and made their own. When the city stepped in, they thought it was all over, but years later, they say they're in a good working relationship to make this skate park one of a kind. Brenton Gomez lays out photos inside the generator at 18th and Vinton. It's playing host to X, an art exhibit aimed at influencing Omaha’s next skate park. Viewers will be able to see photos of skate spaces around the globe and pick out what they like. It’s feedback Gomez will take to meetings with the city.

"What makes a good skate park is the ownership people have in it. So, it has a lot to do with having the opportunity to give your voice into the space,” said Brenton Gomez. Lynch Park sits off 20th and Center streets. It was originally given to the city by a family and developed. But it went unused and fell into disrepair. Sometime in 2019, neighborhood kids took it over, building a DIY skate park.

Quote from parks director regarding ARPA funds:

Parks director Matt Kalcevich said the city has now dedicated $3 million in ARPA funds to revamp the entire park.

"There's a vision to expand the park in general and use more of the footprint that's available to the north of the existing space. Reactivating the existing baseball field, a creation of an open green space that was a baseball field and trying to make that more multi-purpose. Redoing, or revamping the pavilion, bathrooms, the reactivation of basketball, potentially tennis or pickleball and perhaps football,” Matt Kalcevich said.

Doesn't sound like the city is anticipating a permanent skate park at lunch. The improvements listed would eat up the $3 million budget. At least that's how I read it.

To celebrate the closing of X, at Amplify's Generator Space, X at Lynch Park on Friday, April 14th from 6pm-8pm, invites participants to celebrate the future of Lynch Park on-site with food, music, and skateboarding. Exhibition organizers will reposition work from the exhibition and the community feedback gathered during it's 4-week run in the physical space of the park to contextual and make meaning of the connections between skateboarding, community, and place.

City of Omaha approves first phase of Lynch Park improvements



A revamp 10 years in the works is finally on deck at Lynch Park near 20th and Center streets. The slow grind of city government is getting a $2.5 million overall improvement across the finish line thanks to funds from the American Rescue Plan Act. Omaha City Council approved the first phase, fixing up the ball field, basketball court, and resurfacing. Other phases upgrade amenities like the do-it-yourself skate park, assembled by the Nebraska Public Skateparks Council.
